Hunter: The Reckoning, World of Darkness | Campaign

About the adventure

A Hunters Hunted II Chronicle Los Angeles is a city ruled by the dead—Anarch vampires who claim freedom but still cling to power, preying on the living in the shadows. Without Camarilla oversight, there are no Princes to enforce the Masquerade, no Justicars to keep Kindred in check. The city runs on chaos and compromise, the unspoken rule being simple: Don’t make a mess too big for others to ignore. But one of them has broken that rule. Viktor LaCroix, a Toreador gone rogue, has turned the city into his hunting ground. His victims aren’t just disappearing—they’re left as statements, bodies drained and displayed in high-profile locations, each a work of grotesque artistry. He isn’t just feeding. He’s performing. The Anarchs whisper of stopping him, but they’re too divided, too wary of what it means to hunt their own. Killing him would be an admission of failure. Letting him continue is an even greater risk. That means someone else has to handle it. But hunting Viktor isn’t something that can be done alone. It takes an alliance—one forged not from trust, but from necessity. Zealots who see every Kindred as an abomination to be purged, government operatives who want to contain the threat with as little exposure as possible, scholars who believe knowledge is more powerful than a stake through the heart, and independents who simply refuse to let another monster slip away. None of them agree on how this should be done. Some would burn every vampire in the city to be sure. Others believe there’s more to learn before the killing blow is struck. A few might even question whether Viktor is the real problem—or just a symptom of something worse festering in LA’s underbelly. Yet despite their differences, they are all hunters. And Viktor is prey. The city won’t make this easy. The Anarchs may not claim Viktor, but they won’t stand by and let outsiders dictate how things are handled. Some might offer information—for a price. Others see the hunters as useful tools, willing to let them take out Viktor before turning on them. The police are closing in, the media is circling, and every step forward risks drawing the attention of something even worse than Viktor: a vampire who actually knows how to play the game. Viktor won’t run. He wants to be hunted. He thrives on it. He will taunt, he will manipulate, and if given the chance, he will turn the tables. If the hunters aren’t careful, they won’t just fail. They’ll become part of the story Viktor is telling—a final, brutal masterpiece. Los Angeles will remember those who fought back. And the darkness will never forget them.

How to prepare

Preparing for Blood and Ashes This chronicle will be an intense, narrative-driven experience that explores themes of horror, loss, and perseverance against the darkness. To fully engage with the story, players should prepare in three key ways: • Mentally & Emotionally: Blood and Ashes is a horror chronicle, and while safety tools will be in place, it will still explore dark themes. Be ready for suspense, moral dilemmas, and moments of high tension. Approach the game with an open mind and a willingness to embrace character-driven storytelling. • Technical Setup: Players will need a Roll20 account for managing character sheets and handling rolls, especially during combat. While some visuals will be used, this chronicle is heavily theater of the mind in approach. • Discord for Communication: The heart of the game will be on Discord, where we will conduct voice sessions, discuss lore, and track character information. A working microphone is required for live sessions, as we will be speaking rather than typing. By preparing both mentally and technically, players will be ready to fully immerse themselves in the hunt, working together to uncover the darkness lurking beneath Los Angeles.

Visuals will help set the tone and deepen the players’ connection to the world. • A Fully-Prepared Roll20 Table – The game will run smoothly on Roll20, complete with character sheets, maps, handouts, and tokens, making gameplay intuitive and visually dynamic. • Deep Knowledge of Lore – Whether you’re new to Vampire: The Masquerade or a longtime fan, I bring extensive knowledge of the setting, ensuring an authentic experience that respects the lore while allowing room for player-driven storytelling. Above all, my goal is to provide a space where players can collaborate in telling a dark, compelling story—one that feels personal, intense, and unforgettable.

Gameplay details

Safety Tools Hunting the supernatural is a dark, intense experience, and Blood and Ashes is a chronicle that explores horror, violence, and moral dilemmas. To ensure that every player is comfortable and engaged, the following safety tools will be used to create a supportive and respectful environment: Session 0 – Establishing Boundaries and Expectations Before play begins, we will hold a Session 0 to discuss themes, tone, and expectations. This will be a space where players can share their comfort levels, personal triggers, and preferred style of play. We will collaboratively establish boundaries and discuss how horror elements—such as violence, psychological manipulation, and themes of power imbalance—are handled. This session ensures that everyone is on the same page before diving into the story. Lines and Veils – Defining Content Boundaries We will use the Lines and Veils system to clearly define what content is off-limits (Lines) and what content should only be implied or kept off-screen (Veils). Players will have the opportunity to privately or openly state topics they do not wish to engage with or only want to be referenced indirectly. This allows us to craft a game that remains immersive while respecting everyone’s comfort levels. Breaks – Giving Space to Regroup The game may explore heavy themes, so scheduled and unscheduled breaks will be encouraged. If at any point a player feels overwhelmed, they can call for a short pause to step away, refocus, or simply take a breath. Breaks help ensure that emotional intensity remains engaging rather than draining. Aftercare – Decompressing After Intense Scenes After each session, we will have a brief aftercare discussion to check in on how everyone is feeling. This is a time to talk about what worked, what felt uncomfortable, and how to adjust for future sessions. Players can share highlights, voice concerns, or simply take a moment to separate themselves from the tension of the game. This ensures that no one leaves a session feeling unsettled or unheard. Open Door – Prioritizing Player Comfort At any point, for any reason, players have the Open Door option: they may step away from the game without explanation. Whether it’s needing a moment to collect themselves or leaving the session entirely, no justification is needed, and there will be no pressure to continue beyond personal comfort. By implementing these safety tools, Blood and Ashes will be a horror chronicle where players can immerse themselves in the darkness while knowing they have full control over their comfort and boundaries. The goal is to tell an intense, gripping story—while ensuring that every participant feels safe, respected, and empowered.

How will character creation work

Character Creation in Blood and Ashes In this chronicle, character creation isn’t just about stats and abilities—it’s about story. Before we touch the character sheet, we will first shape the narrative of who your hunter is, what drives them, and what personal tragedy has led them into this war against the darkness. Each hunter has a reason for fighting back. Did they lose someone to a monster? Were they a victim who survived when they shouldn’t have? Are they driven by duty, revenge, or something else entirely? This tragedy will not only define your character’s past but will shape the decisions they make throughout the chronicle. Once we have their story, we will build their character sheet around that concept, ensuring that their skills, traits, and resources reflect their journey. Whether you are a hardened investigator, a scholar obsessed with the unknown, or a zealot driven by faith, your character will be more than just numbers—they will be someone with something to lose. This approach ensures that every hunter feels fully realized and personal, making the dangers of the hunt all the more real.
