About the adventure

The year is 9:31 Dragon, and the city of Kirkwall has been dealing with many problems. With the influx of people having escaped the Fifth Blight, the arrival of the Arishok and tensions between the mages and the Templars...things are certainly lively! This campaign follows a group who are members of an organisation that smuggles resources to the desperate and needy to ensure their survival. They also help mages escape the grip of the Templars from Kirkwall's Circle "The Gallows". They may not consider themselves criminals, but what they do is certainly not considered legal by the authorities.

About me

Greetings, salutations and andaran atishan everyone! I am Emma, or Hummalou on the internet. I have been running games for 8 years, and for a large portion of that I have been running games that are streamed on Twitch. By day I am a high school teacher and I like to take the patience, humour and inclusive practice I use in my day job to the tables that I run. I am passionate about collaborative storytelling and I am at my best when running games where we laugh, cry and punch oppressive forces in the face! I will always encourage the rule of cool, feeling epic, doing it for the bit and having fun being the highest priority. I take game systems and deconstruct them a little to remove some of the crunch to instead focus on the stories we are weaving together in a more cinematic way. I have always prided myself in creating safe spaces for my players, your comfort and happiness is key. I run inclusive and welcoming spaces, for any and all marginalized people.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation can be discussed during session zero, but the source material will be provided early on so that players who wish to can get a head start. A link to the game's source book will be provided, along with a step by step guide for character creation. Stats do get rolled, and we can handle this during our session zero! We will be making characters that are level 3. Most character backgrounds are an option, just bare in mind the nature of the story and the geographical location of Kirkwall, some things are going to be unlikely without a good story reason for it.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will use zoom for the call, and as such having a decent microphone is preferable and a zoom account. Cameras are not necessary but I am comfortable having people on camera as it can help with roleplay cues. As we are using Roll20, an account there is also needed. You will not need to make your characters or read the rules ahead of time, but the source material will be provided to you when we first start setting up the game so that you can do so if you like.

What Hummalou brings to the table

Game source material provided for characters, and there will be a roll20 for the character sheets and displaying of mood setting images/maps. I like to have music playing during my sessions also, to help set the scene, but this can be turned down to zero on the players end should you not want music playing during the session. My GM style tends towards roleplay forward game sessions, with plenty room to get to know each other and the setting. When combat arises it is to enhance the story we are telling and I tend towards rule of cool and more cinematic combat rather than lots of crunchy rules. In my mind it helps keep the flow going and helps us tell an epic story together.

Homebrew rules

I have some minor tweaks to the game system, such as avoiding the distances being measured in yards and allowing for things like advantage or disadvantage on rolls.

** A note on the content warnings** The mentioned content warnings are all inbuilt parts to this universe that can be hard to avoid. Given the nature of the campaign, your group will always work towards defending people against these things and never working on behalf of the oppressors. I always have a session zero ahead of playing, that will include vibe checking each other and discussion the lines and veils (which get send as a document ahead of session zero). Comfort breaks appear half way through and at the end of a session I like to spend about 30 minutes decompressing and doing some stars and wishes so that we can celebrate each others wins and set intentions for future sessions. X, N and O used in zoom/discord call to check for comfort during a session.
