About the adventure

Years ago, the city of London was swallowed by the Earth and transported to a subterranean place of horrors now known as the Neath. When this happened, Londoners did what they do best; they got over it and adapted to their new situation. Now London is a city of stunning diversity, where sightings of devils, squid-faced individuals, people made of stone, and talking rats are an everyday occurance and hardly worth making a big deal over. In this Quickstart Venture the players take on the roles of members of the Hunters, a group dedicated to ridding the Neath of its most vile monsters. At this time their sights are set upon Jack of Smiles, a serial killer currently haunting the streets of London. To this end the group's patron has set them up with a contact, a patron of the arts who goes by the title The Ambitious Muse, who may be able to provide invaluable intel on their target, but to earn this contact's favor the Concern must first locate a wayward poet. Disappearance of the Transfigured Poet is an introductory adventure included in the Fallen London Quickstart guide.

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Gameplay details

Players may request to pause the game at any time should any sensitive material come up in play. They may do so vocally or by typing "X" into the chat. When a game is pause the group will respectfully discuss the content in question, and work to revise the situation to remove it and avoid further reference of the material in the future. Players are also free to leave the table at any time should it be necessary to to so. A full break will be scheduled for roughly half-way through the game. Fallen London uses a D6 Dice Pool system. To perform an action players assemble a dice pool based on their attribute and skill ratings and roll. Results of 5-6 are Hits, and the number of Hits a roll generates determines the effectiveness of the action, ranging from a Defeat (0), Unstable Success (1), Success (2), or Triumphant Success (3+). This game is heavily weighted towards investigative horror and character-driven roleplay. The nature of the setting means that characters will very rarely need to concern themselves with death, and concequences will typically be narrative in nature.
