About the adventure
Welcome to Waterdeep, home of the illustrious Yawning Portal and its companion, The Dungeon. The Dungeon is a hole in the center of the tavern and is THE one-stop shop for all adventurers looking to test their metal. Be brave, find treasure, and save the day, these are all things that can be done in this dungeon. While all the patrons and adventurers of the Yawning Portal enjoy their travels into the dungeon, a more sinister plot develops below. Will you be the ones to find out the real reason why this dungeon was made? Come and join fellow adventurers as you progress through this classic D&D 5e adventure with a new set of twists and turns, all designed around player choice. This game will also be using the new 2024 rules for 5e, so expect to see fantastical fights and great options for all players to really delve into and enjoy the system! This adventure picks up where Waterdeep: Dragon Heist leaves off, taking characters of 5th level all the way to 20th level should they explore the entirety of the mysterious dungeon designed by the Mad Mage himself

Meet the Game Master
About me
Hello and welcome to the Tavern! I am an avid TTRPG enjoyer and have been for many years now. I started as a player enjoying D&D 5th Edition but have since moved to being a Game Master and I have not looked back since! While I started with D&D 5th Edition, I have since added many other games to my roster. Some notable examples are Avatar Legends, a TTRPG based on Avatar the Last Airbender, Pathfinder, and Call of Cthulhu, a game focused on the Lovecraftian mythos. I believe variety is the spice of life and I love to try out different systems. If a player wants me to run a system I haven't used before, I am always ready to learn! When running my games, I ensure safety and respect for all players and set clear rules and boundaries. I love players having fun within the game and I feel that the fun should not come at the expense of others. I do not role-play sexual or intimate scenes, so the most that will occur is a fade to black with no details. I have run many games over my years as a Game Master, gaining the experience required to be a great storyteller while keeping creative freedom and flexibility for the shared story-telling aspects of TTRPGs. When playing one of my games, you can expect great story structure and the freedom to do what you want, knowing that it will lead to great improvisational story elements. The storytelling method I use that makes this possible is the diamond structure. Every game has a start and end point, but everything in between can go wherever the players take it I look forward to seeing you in my games!
View Profile →Character creation
Creating your character
Character creation will be done during session 0. Just come with an open mind and an idea for a character concept. Characters can be imported from D&D Beyond if needed, but creating the character in FoundryVTT helps ensure all features, abilities, and items work as intended within the system.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Players will need to join the discord server where I can apply the correct roles. Players will also need a mic, computer, and working internet access to play the game. Please make your characters during session 0 in FoundryVTT.
What TheTavernTeller brings to the table
I bring a wealth of music to help set the mood and ambiance. I also bring my map tools to bring the maps to life, with items and designs fitting for the setting. I have the entirety of the Dungeon mapped out in the VTT, with functionality included. I am an experienced storyteller and can craft grand scenario on the fly, while still adhering to the overall story of the game. I love to make sure player backgrounds and personal goals are implemented into the story, ensuring the story of the game feels custom to the players. I am a rules-light GM who is very ok with Rule of Cool. I enjoy creating memorable moments rather than sticking to a set of rules that, in my opinion, are designed to impede player creativity.

How TheTavernTeller creates a safe table
Players can expect a game focused heavily on combat and exploration, with a decent amount of roleplay. My rules for exploring, roleplaying, and combat in D&D 5e are a bit different than Rules as Written. These changes help keep the game at a better pace while also allowing for more player agency and action in scenes. I want players in my games to feel like the heroes of the story so I ensure that is done to the best of my ability. For safety tools, there is a link to a consent checklist doc on the discord server that is necessary to join to play the game, along with instructions for what to do. My X, N, & O's are digital, using either discord or foundry VTT as the location to show them. During session 0, expect an overview of my rule differences for the 5e system, finalizing character creation, coming up with a reason for everyone to adventure together, and to have a intro session that sets up the campaign. During the session 0, we will also go over player and GM expectations for the game.
