Wartorn Bootcamp: Learn to Play DnD5e

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | One-Shot

About the adventure

Looking to learn how to play DnD? This oneshot is designed to teach newcomers basic gameplay and offer a safe and open space to test out roleplaying with a new character! Come with a group of friends and see the wonder that comes from tabletop roleplaying games! In this single session adventure (or oneshot), you'll take on the role of an upstart adventurer looking to earn gold and glory by signing on with one of the most prestigious adventuring guilds in the land, the Wartorn Clan! These heroes have saved the world on a number of occasions, and now it's time to find out if you have the stuff to hang with the best of the best! You'll create a level one character using the Player's Handbook in a quick pregame discussion, then hop into this short adventure to learn what all those scores, modifiers, spells, and features mean! This is designed a sort of "Tutorial" for players with an experienced Dungeon Master who specializes with new players! So come with your heads ready to learn, and your hearts ready for adventure with your first session of Dungeons and Dragons!

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Rules as Written (RaW)

Games that are ran “Rules as Written” emphasize realism and stick to the letter of the rules, allowing players to explore creative solutions while still operating under a consistent rule set. Players have the ability to utilize the rules in creative ways to create awesome characters and moments in the game.

Dungeon Crawl

A “Dungeon Crawl” is a scenario where players navigate a dungeon or labyrinth-like environment for the entirety of the adventure. It emphasizes battling monsters, collecting loot, and avoiding traps to survive to the end!

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

How to prepare

Webcam is optional (mine will be on or off upon request). Microphone necessary (some people talking and some people texting will slow a lot of things down). I encourage new players to read the rules on their own, but it is not mandatory. If you have any questions on rules, please let me know.

What I provide

I will have a Dndbeyond campaign to allow sharing of basic rules, we will use owlbear rodeo for combat with basic tokens. Character voices are optional, but encouraged. I use character voices normally for NPCs, but will refrain if this makes anyone uncomfortable. I am a very avid subscriber to the Rule of Cool, but as this is a learning session for beginners, I will always clarify if something is not Rules as Written so you can know what to expect from other DMs at other tables.

Gameplay details

An RPG Consent form will be sent to players at the beginning of play before character creation. A short session 0 will occur before play as well to openly discuss everyone's expectations from the game. Breaks can be taken as needed. Time at the end of play will be allotted to debrief and discuss everyone's reactions to the game.

How will character creation work

Character creation will happen during this session before play. Players can use Standard Array, Point Buy, or Rolling for Stats (using 4d6, dropping lowest). Players will be level 1. Dndbeyond will be available, but if you wish to use another form for your Character Sheet, that is absolutely ok so long as it's shared with the DM before play. We will make characters using the 2014 Player's Handbook options only as this is a learning session and I do not wish to overwhelm a new player with too many options.
