Best Served Hot: A Murder Mystery

Best Served Hot: A Murder Mystery

Kids on Bikes | One-Shot

About the adventure

Spend your evening doing what everyone loves best: solving a murder! This one-shot is designed to be played over the course of a few hours as you investigate the sudden (but perhaps not surprising?) murder of Baron ap Brindle. The Baron leaves behind a complicated legacy, with a wealthy estate and more than a few skeletons in the closet. Was it the butler? The jilted lover? The prodigal son? Or just maybe... the Baron himself? Play revolves around the investigation, with most actions simply narrated as we tell a story together. If there are consequences for failure, or the chance of a surprise clue, we will use dice to add that most fickle of players: luck. Mechanically, we'll be using a 'hack' of Kids on Bikes designed for Dimension 20's Mentopolis. It's simple to pick up, great for sandbox role play, and makes sure you can snoop and sneak like the best gumshoe out there. This one-shot is designed for all levels of experience. If you have a friend who isn't sure about tabletop games, bring them along for a night of sleuthing! Careful listening and a nose for trouble will carry you through to find, at the end of the night, who done it.

How to prepare

The game will happen over Discord, so a mic is required (and webcam is optional). Other than character creation, nothing else is needed to jump into the game! Some rules will be explained at the beginning, but otherwise narrative storytelling will take precedence as you work to solve the murder.

What I provide

The mystery will happen mostly in the theater of mind, but we will use maps for several important locations. Over the course of the investigation there will be people to interrogate, puzzles to solve, and clues to connect. But be careful! Non-player characters (NPCs) will have their own motives, and you have to decide who to trust as you work to unravel the Baron's past. I'll do my best to ensure the group moves forward to bring everything to a satisfying conclusion by the end of the night. The first rule is to have fun, and all further rules are to support that goal. The game system is to add some structure to the story, but will remain in the background until necessary. Dice rolls will happen at moments of tension, but your own brains and wit are most important.

Gameplay details

Safety tools will mostly rely on the Luxton technique: if you feel anything uncomfortable we can drop immediately out of character to talk and check in. X, N, and O cards can be messaged privately to me (and will be explained before beginning play). As it is about the murder of an disliked gentlemen, there will be talking about (but not acting out of) crimes and unsavory content. There can be breaks whenever the group needs them, and we can adjust details for a younger audience if preferred.

How will character creation work

Characters will be designed before we meet as a group, to ensure maximum time is given to play. I will send instructions to create a PC, and will be available to check in to assist as needed. Characters are simple, with 6 attributes to reflect what they care about and what they're good at.
