Wait, We're the Heroes? a PbP Adventure

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

The small town of Valenward has lived in quiet peace…until today. You join our campaign as one of the townsfolk (i.e.-a common villager, not an adventurer) who happens to be friends with the local wizard who helped found the town and create the wards that give the town its name. However, the wards seem to have failed, and being among the few who are welcome in his tower, you are sent to find him. To your dismay, he’s missing, but what are these packages he left behind? And why are your names on them? You are each armed with a magic item about which you know a name and command word, the skills your profession has taught you, and the desperation of a city under siege, you’re sent to find the wizard so the wards can be restored. What befell him…and what will befall you as you set foot outside of the safety you’ve known in town? This looks like a job for heroes…which is exactly what you must become.

Sean makes fun and creative NPCs and settings. All the NPCs felt like different people. He'll also incorporate your character's backstory into the story if you give him one. I felt like I had a lot of different choices for how the story could go. He's very patient with explaining rules too.

Having an awesome time in PbP games with SuburbanDad! His creativity is fantastic and the characters are written/delivered really well from villains to NPCs!

I've played in-person Pathfinder with Suburban Dad. He is amazing! He really paid attention to my backstory and weaved it into game play seamlessly. I was brand new and he walked me thru step-by-step and was very patient with my million questions, and also when I couldn't remember the answers to those million questions and I asked again. In those games the story world that he came up with was really immersive and we had a lot of fun! He is a very talented game master! Highly recommend him!

Sean has this ability to make anyone feel safe and welcome. He’s so supportive and just genuinely kind. I never feel pressured or nervous when I’m at his tables.

How to prepare

As a play-by-posy, the expectation is to check the Discord daily. Granted, there may be times when posting is not necessary (waiting for someone else to do something or being unconscious in a combat scenario, for example), but it's more fun for all involved if we all work together to keep the narrative moving along.

What I provide

We will be using Discord and I'll also be providing a Google Slideshow for maps and NPC images.

Gameplay details

A session 0 will be a chance to build characters and to share any triggers so we can be sure the campaign is fun for everyone. Throughout the campaign, we will utilize an open door policy so anyone, at any time, can message me to let me know if something is taking a turn that makes them uncomfortable or if a new trigger is discovered. The goal, as it should be, is for everyone to be free to have as much fun as possible by taking their lovingly crafted characters on a grand adventure in a fantasy world.

How will character creation work

Your characters are commoners in the town of Valenward. As such, you'll figure out what role they filled there (blacksmith, tavern wench, beggar, scribe, etc.). As your characters begin as commoners, not heroes, we will use a stat list of 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, and 8. It's your choice which stats to put the numbers in. Additionally, you'll always have advantage on rolls for one skill based on your character's background (so a hunter of wild game, for example, could logically have advantage on survival while a beggar might choose persuasion). Starting equipment will simply employ logic based on what sort of things your character would have based on their place in society. As part of the backstory, you'll need to figure out how and why your character is one of the few to know this mysterious wizard who is the town's protector.
