About the adventure

BAM! YOINK! ZIP! The world of animation is at your fingertips. From the Golden Age of cinema where cartoon shorts reigned, to the halcyon days of Gen X's Saturday morning rituals, step out of the boring world and into the celluoid dreamscape. Is this is a campaign? How does that even work? Well, first of all, the first and cardinal rule of TOON is--"Act Before You Think!" Don't question it. It's zany fun. But if you feel the need for some continuity, consider this: Eccentric multimillionaires Ernest and Greta Drummond were the mysterious King and Queen of an animation studio that could have rivaled Warner Brothers and MGM--if anyone had seen their work. They commissioned brilliant shorts, employing up-and-coming artists and, later, figures blacklisted from polite Hollywood society. Their works were screened for a single night at a theatre owned by the Drummonds in the backwater town of Munchley, Idaho, before being sealed in a vault, never to be seen again. Now, decades after the Drummonds' disappearance, their lawyers have unsealed that vault as per the directives left by the owners. What follows are a sampling of the genius put to film. This is a game of Toon, where players take on the roles of cartoon characters. Gone are hit points and death. Instead, characters are 'boggled' or 'fall down'--only to get back up in time for the next cartoon (3 minutes). The goal is not to accumulate treasure or defeat monsters; it's to leave your fellow players and the GM (called the Animator) laughing so hard they can't help but applaud. Give Toon a try. Toon is easy. Comedy is hard.

About me

Greetings from the northern wilds! I'm a "forever DM" but not in a bad way. I love DMing, because why limit yourself to one character when you can be all of them (less the PCs)?! DMing is my outlet for imagination and creativity. I don't draw, I'm not musical in any way, but what I am is a storyteller. Since childhood my head has been overflowing with ideas that had no outlet until I discovered D&D. I love to homebrew and I love constructing epic, sprawling campaigns that evolve and grow with the players' contributions. I'm a published author and have been a freelance writer for D&D back in 3rd Edition days. I'm looking to run D&D games, but I've run many other systems. Favourites include Aberrant, HERO System, All Flesh Must Be Eaten, Chronicles of Darkness (I particularly enjoy Beast: The Primordial!), Rifts (Savage Worlds and the original Palladium system), but my greatest love is for Hackmaster 5th Edition. So I'm also interested in creating "Learn to..." campaigns with different systems. I would love to give new players and seasoned D&D players a chance to explore new systems and see what else is out there in the vast galaxy of games. I've been playing RPGs since 1983, and DMing since 1984. But: Years of experience mean nothing if you can't adapt, adjust, and innovate to make your game the best experience for everyone at the table. My two tennets of gaming are: "Games are meant to be fun" and "Don't be afraid to get weird". Let's roll some dice.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created during Session 0 where players can create a cast of characters that complement each other. Remember, the goal of the game is to be funny, so an odd assortment of characters is essential!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need a Discord account, a Roll20 account, and a working microphone. No camera is needed. Silly voices are welcome but optional.

What Jared S brings to the table

I bring experience with the system itself, having played Toon since 1992, and decades of exposure to cartoons in all their myriad forms.

Safety

How Jared S creates a safe table

Toon is a game of cartoon violence and mayhem. It's meant to be silly and over-the-top, but that can still prove to be troublesome. To that end, character creation is done during Session 0 and we will discuss players' comfort levels in the forms of Lines and Veils.
