About the adventure

Welcome to a adjusted run of the module Storm King's Thunder, adapted to use for the 2024 rules, with extra content and incorporating the Bastion system! The current group just ran through Lost Mine of Phandelver to completion and we have decided to keep it going towards a new campaign, running mostly a pre written module but with some extra flair and fitting it to the new rules. In this campaign the party has set themselves as heroes to the small town of Phandalin and have a stake in both the town's success and a nearby rich mine. Storm King's Thunder deals with an increased level of giant activity for unknown causes. Fire Giants, Frost Giants, Hill Giants and Stone Giants have all been seen more and more often, and have had many spats with humanoid settlements over the past few months. In addition to that they don't all seem to be acting very friendly to each other type either, and when giants fight, the small folk suffer with the immense destruction that comes with it. Through some chance encounters our party will be dealing with the consequences of one of these giant activities and from it they will slowly uncover more of the reasons why this is happening and perhaps help stop it or at least save the humanoid races from being trampled beneath. We will also be running the Bastion system from the DMG 2024, a system that allows us to build home bases with features and benefits as well as having them "act" even when the party is outside of town in what is known as a "Bastion Turn" . As such you will always have a home to return to, with plenty of friendly characters and perhaps a few less savory as well. With these mechanics we will be enhancing Phandalin and ripping the benefits for both the party, the town and the nearby mine.

About me

Me Hey there! I’m Pedro, but online I go by TompsonX. I used to run The Adventurer’s Guild, a D&D 5e community server with over 5,000 sessions played, and I’ve been a professional DM for over 8 years. I currently run two active campaigns, but I’m almost always looking for players in the GMT 18:30–23:00 time slot. My games focus on roleplay and meaningful combat, usually running about 3 hours per session. I like to offer a free trial session so you can see if our styles click before committing. If your schedule doesn’t match my regular campaigns, I’m also available for private or custom sessions—these are a bit more expensive, but perfect if you want to play at a different time. My goal is simple: to make each game fun, challenging, and memorable, while letting your characters shine and shape the story along the way.

Character creation
Creating your character

New characters will be starting at level 5 with extra gear chosen by the DM. We are using only PHB 2024 content but it's okay to reflavor it to other Forgotten Realm Races like playing a "Goblin" which is just a reflavor of a Halfling.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

Microphone is mandatory, Cam is completely optional and unlikely to be used. A Roll20 account and Discord account are required. Contact @tompsonx on Discord for a short interview (4 questions) and then I'll add you to the group chat.

What TompsonX brings to the table

I have purchased all the Roll20 content that is required for this campaign: Storm King's Thunder Adventure Module 2024 Rules I also have other content that I utilize when the ones above are not enough such as maps from Patreon, DMsGuild extensions, etc. I utlize ambient music through roll20. My campaigns are not the most immersive experience, a better way to look at them is a group of friends around a table playing the game as intended than a fully voice acted fully immersive experience. I still do voices and I still take it extremely serious of course, specially during times of important decisions, but it's not a 100% uptime. In regards to rule of cool vs rules as written I would say my campaigns are 90% rules as written, with the last 10% being either things that just make sense in the moment considering the unique circumstances or interesting use of spells or features during roleplay.I have two examples: In a campaign I ran years ago, two of my players partnered up with Hypnotic Pattern and Detect Thoughts in roleplay to try to access memories of someone who couldn't remember something. Neither of the spells do that, but by mixing them together and with the scene at hand it made quite a bit of sense, and after a few successful checks they learned information they otherwise wouldn't have. Another example: A couple of years ago in a jungle campaign, we had an artificer and they defeated a Shambling Mound, a plant creature that reacts very well to lightning. Well the artificer had a Lightning Launcher, so with a bit of ingenuity we came up with a way to enhanceh is lightning launcher once per day. The Shambling Mound's Core is akin to a seed that grows a sapling over time. If you feed it a constant buzz of electricity you grow it quicker. Therefore if you cut the sapling that grows you release a surge of electricity. Putting this together resulted in adding a section to his lightning launcher on the side, where the core was kept a long with a sharp blade, which upon triggering would cut the sapling, empower the weapon for the next shot and cause overall no damage to the weapon nor stop the sapling's growth. Don't get me wrong this wasn't as easy as it sounds, it included quite a few checks and downtime to do, but it's the type of rule- adjacent things I like doing.
