About the adventure

Inspired by the films of Studio Ghibli (esp. Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and My Neighbor Totoro), in this campaign players are changelings, which in Meiji-era Japan are interpreted as Shinto spirits who must contend with a rapidly changing country. On the one hand the sudden influx of Western ideas has added a burst of vibrancy to the Dreaming as people contemplate new inventions and ways of living, but has also brought a wave of industrialization which threatens ancient sacred wildlands. Meanwhile the Meiji government seeks religious supremacy by converting all Shinto worship to reverence of the emperor as a living god, and rationalists seek to disprove many ancient folk beliefs which they view as barriers to the country's modernization. The spirit of wonder endures for now, but how long?

About me

With 19 years of GMing experience, I run player character-driven games where PC decisions can determine the entire course of campaigns--with ripple effects that sometimes even I can't anticipate (which is when I get most excited.) I specialize in historical games, with deep research into the era and an eye for accuracy. I don't run games on rails. I create settings interwoven with PC backstories and populated by NPC's who each have their own nuanced motivations, perspectives, limited information, and schemes, which are all dynamically influenced by the actions of both the PC's and each other, which can make things delightfully unpredictable as EVERYONE is forced to improvise. I especially love intrigue, horror, and involved roleplaying, but also snappy dialogue, the nitty gritty of tactical maneuvering, and character creation.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will happen primarily during session 0, likely with further polishing between then and session 1. However, I'm always happy to discuss character concepts even prior to session 0.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need a Discord account, a mic, and preferably a webcam (so I can see the general vibe among players and adjust pacing accordingly.) Characters don't need to be made ahead of time, but I'm always happy to discuss ideas.

What Shepherd brings to the table

I will bring a dedicated Discord server and extensive materials (both video and text) on both the historical period and the beliefs about kami, yokai, etc.

Safety

How Shepherd creates a safe table

While light-hearted compared to most World of Darkness games, it's still going to inherently deal with some of the supernatural horrors one might expect of the setting in addition to the social upheavals one would expect from one of the most disruptive periods of human history.
