Yarona: Lords Forge - First Session $0
Big Eyes, Small Mouth | Campaign
About the adventure
The Rifoniian Imperial armies are victorious, albeit wounded and tired. While lacking the training, discipline and strategies of the Rifoniians, the Torgaardian Tribesmen of the Northwest have impressive strength and stamina, not to mention the occasional Dragonrider. To the Southwest, in the Ironrib Desert the D'arthane, being a strange sort of race of metal Golems, are also able to muster forces to give pause to the most stalwart Primi Centurion. Now, with the Rifoniian Legions having achieved two incredible victories, The Emperor now turns his focus upon strengthening Rifoniian Political presence in these new territories. But while the west has been won by Blood and Treaties, a shadow and a threat begin to creep forward from the East. What schemes and plots are brewing in the hearts and minds of the Draewar in those mighty mountains on Rifonil's eastern border? Before anyone can say for sure, Rex Ursorum, a lawless brute of a man and his band of mercenary thieves must be dealt with and the stolen Rifoniian province brought back under the protection of the Empire. Answer the Emperor's Call. Bring your Registered Fellowship to the East. Parade the head of the criminal Rex Usorum through the streets of Rifonil City and try not to become too embarrassed by the rewards lavished upon you by a grateful Empire! Senatus Populusque Rifonil!!
Game style
Rule of Cool (RoC)
“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.
Roleplay Heavy
“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

How to prepare
I expect to be using a Discord Voice channel in concert with Foundry VTT, so having a good Mic is important. You can get the BESM 4th Ed. Core book ahead of time if you like. It's available from dyskami.ca (Hardcover Printed book: 60 usd) or driveThruRPG.com (Watermarked PDF: 30). Just look for "BESM Fourth Edition". That being said, I've gone to some lengths to provide Foundry VTT with a great deal of the necessary info so you can also "Borrow the GM's book" on game day.
What I provide
I've bought the license for Foundry VTT, which means all you need is the browser you're using right now. The game system I'll be using is Big Eyes, Small Mouth. If you haven't heard of BESM, don't feel bad, it's not the mainstream system it deserves to be, yet. This means I'm going into this expecting to patiently explain things.
Gameplay details
Session 0 will feature not just Character Creation, but also a quick review of Lines and Veils, including an opportunity to have me add new items. It'll be on a page at https://yarona.diebot.org/ in just a few days, if not already. Foundry VTT also has a mod that let's players throw a NXO card on the map with just a couple clicks.

How will character creation work
Basic BESM4 Character sheets have three stats that cover what other systems need six stats to manage. It is a Points-Buy system and you'll be investing in Body, Mind, and Soul on a scale that caps at 12, but the adult human average is 4. There are also Attributes you can buy, and you can select defects to get you some Bonus Points to help with your characters cost. Carrying on from the Basic BESM4, I've made two other stats. Because I like the concept of Character Alignment, I use Order and Good stats; they may be considered stats, but unlike BMS, they cost nothing to set during Creation, and they can only be shifted by in character role-play. I've also created a number of Species/Race Templates with a package of attributes applicable to the entire people-group; and Profession Templates which function very much like D&D Classes. Session 0 will be there for all of you wonderful players to bombard me any questions you might have, but if you want to get a head start on the process, make up a Basic D&D character and I'll help you convert it. For example, a Paladin would be a character with both Warrior and Cleric professions. An Arcane Archer who's fond of water effects would be a Ranger and an Aqua-Mancer.
