About the adventure

The continent of Emerald Fall is stricken with a new horror, the dead rise. The source of the foul energies animating them is stumping scholars of necromantic energies. It is up to heroes, just like those made by the players, to find the source of these energies and put a stop to it. The party of player characters (or PCs) will join the story prior to the knowledge of the impending doom becoming widespread among the populace. This adventure is designed to play from level 1 to level 15 in which the PCs will tackle obstacles, fight cults, solve puzzles, forge alliances, and ultimately put an end to the sinister forces behind the terrible curse. This game is designed to be friendly to those of any experience level, from those brand new to the hobby all the way up to the veterans who have played for decades. There will be a fairly even mix of roleplay and combat. The tone of the game will be spooky but in an approachable way (think the CW’s Supernatural or the movie Van Helsing).

About me

I am a roleplaying veteran. I started as a player, the new guy in a long-running group that had already been together for years. I fell in love with the hobby and wanted to share it with others and knew that the only way to do that was to sit behind the screen. As a GM I know that I can do whatever I want within the game, but I also know that what I want is for my players to have fun. I run games where players laugh, feel powerful, and hopefully care about what is going on in the world I create around them. I run games where the PCs feel like they matter and that their actions matter. I have two governing principles, 1) let players do cool things and 2) everyone leaves the table wanting to come back for another round.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation, for those who want to create their own, will happen as a part of Session 0. Stats will be decided based on player choice using the rules in the Player Core rulebook. We will start off at level 1 (but won't be staying there long). Any options within the Player Core or Player Core 2 will be on the table. Anything outside of those books will need to be discussed with me beforehand. I have built custom classes and races before so feel free to come up with something fun if you want. If you do not want to make your own character, you can use one of the prebuilt characters I have made. Just let me know what kind of hero you want to play and I will guide you to the prebuilt that best matches your playstyle. The backstory, how the character behaves, their goals, their fears, etc. will all be up to you.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need something that will allow you to listen and speak to the group. How you go about doing that is up to you. A headset with mic is typically the easiest and most available method. Just please be respectful to the group as far as background noise goes. If you have a lot of background noise, muting yourself when not speaking or simply using push to talk functionality would be for the best. Webcams are optional. I will be using one but you do not have to if you do not wish to. You will need an account on Discord as it is the preferred video chat program we will be using. You will need a Roll20 account as well as it will be the platform for dice rolls and where maps will be displayed. Lastly, prior to Session 0, I will share setting documents with you. Please at least skim through these materials prior to Session 0. This will give you a good frame of reference for the world and how things will work. You don't need to be an expert on my setting (that's my job) but doing a little prep work will go a long way.

What Ethan Queen brings to the table

I am bringing along the custom setting and campaign. The beauty of this style of game is that both are moldable by player choice and input. Do you want to come from a certain type of city; bam, that city now exists. Do you have a fun but unusual ancestry you want to play as; they're there for you. I will bring the system knowledge and the wisdom to know when to play by Da Rulez and when to let players do cool stuff. I will also shape combat so that it doesn't feel like it is dragging on forever but still feels like players earn their victories (or defeats).

Safety

How Ethan Queen creates a safe table

In session 0 we will go over lines and veils as well as explain how to use the X, N, & O cards. There will be at least one 10ish minute break about halfway through each session. If anyone needs to step away from the table for their wellbeing, you don't need to ask permission. This is meant to be fun, not a classroom. Lastly, the content warnings are not necessarily an exhaustive list of the types of content that may come up within the game or even content that is guaranteed to happen. We will go into greater detail on this while discussing lines and veils and the X, N, & O cards are there for all the cases that we don't think of ahead of time.
