About the adventure

For more than two years, winter has kept its hold on Icewind Dale. The region, always remote from civilized lands, now is locked behind snowed-down mountain passes and a frozen sea keeping outsiders out - and keeping you firmly in this new Land of Winter. On clear nights, villagers claim you can see Auril, the Frostmaiden, flying across the sky, watching over her domain. Beyond the relative safety and warmth of Ten-Towns, many dangers lurk in the cold - from packs of kobolds and goblins driven on a desperate hunt for food, to abonimable snowmen and the walking dead. And somewhere in the vast, frozen wasteland, the ancient dragon Arveiaturace makes her lair. This is where your characters come in. This is a dire time for the people of Ten-Towns, and without the assistance of a band of adventurers, Icewind Dale is surely doomed. To avoid this grim fate, you will roll up a first level character using the new 2024 Player's Handbook, and take part in a fellowship of brave wanderers who will travel the Dale, solving problems, and learning the secrets behind the seemingly eternal winter you are suffering. This game is welcome to players both experienced and new to D&D, and will take you from level 1 to as high as level 12. In addition to the mechanics granted by your species, background, and class, Rime of the Frostmaiden includes a "Secret" that you will receive at character creation that will provide interesting roleplaying opportunities - if and when the time comes to reveal your secret to your fellow adventurers. I have previously ran this whole adventure as a DM using the old 2014 ruleset, and I'm looking forward to tweaking it to craft the best possible version of the story to fit you and your characters.

How to prepare

You will need a microphone/headset to be able to join into voice chat on Discord. You will need free accounts for Discord and D&D Beyond.

What I provide

I bring access to the 2024 books on D&D Beyond (along with many of the older books), and we will also be using DDB for the Maps VTT feature (with Foundry VTT as the "backup plan" if the Maps experience is less than ideal). I will use my experience from running the adventure previously to remix it, making sure you experience the best parts of it while adapting it to fit you and your characters. I'm not a strictly rules-as-written DM, and I'm happy to go with the rule of cool if you have any outside the box ideas you would like to try.

Gameplay details

During session 0, I will go over some of the content warnings and make sure we are on the same page as to the tone of the campaign we are getting into. There are certainly some dark horror elements to this adventure, but there will also be moments of brightness between these, with NPCs both silly and fantastical to break up the more grim elements. I will try to time a break to fit roughly halfway through the sessions.

How will character creation work

Standard character creation per the 2024 Player's Handbook. We will use the new, updated versions of the classes and species, though older subclasses can be used if they work well with the new class design. We can discuss this further in Discord prior to session 0.
