About the adventure

In the grim darkness of the far future there is ONLY WAR. I am breaking out this rare percentile based Warhammer 40k adaptation by Fantasy Flight Games for gamers of discerning taste for an ongoing campaign. Play as a member of the Imperial Guard. A soldier in a distant, authoritarian future that is humanity's first line of defense against traitors and aliens. Your squad is one many of untold masses sent to die for their Emperor's glory. Often your own side is more dangerous than they enemy. Your only chance to survive the suicidal missions, feuds among commanding officers, religious purges, and dubious quartermasters are your squad mates and heavy ordnance. Lead thrilling assaults on enemy positions, sabotage infrastructure, make heroic stands against waves of enemy counterattacks, and try to survive while doing it. Revel in your reputation as you become prestigious in the eyes of the Imperium and secure the best postings and gear for your missions. Play your cards right and you might get promoted enough to get away from the front line.

About me

I have been running games since I was twelve. Since then I have read every book on gaming theory I can get my hands on to work towards running the best games people have ever played. I like to joke that I only even got my degree as a historian just so I can make my settings better! If you are gaming at my table, you are in for worlds and systems you can really sink your teeth into, tailored to your specific interests, in any genre you want. Whether you want to expand your horizons or just fight evil and take its stuff, join one of my games and make some friends and memories. Hope to roll with you soon!

Character creation

Creating your character

I will provide options before Session 0 as a group message so everyone has a chance to think about the kind of character they want. During Session 0 we will go through the character creation process from the core rules as a group. We will create the characters on editable PDFs that we can save and share through discord. If you have played the game before you are welcome to use the additional options from 'Shield of Humanity' and 'Hammer of the Emperor'. The campaign will start with the party being from a New Cadian Mechanized Infantry regiment.

The current party

You want it we got it! Heavy metal escapades on a futuristic warfront. Tacticool HFY action interspersed with moments of camaraderie and misadventure in navigating life in the grimdark future of the 41st Millennium. We are using the percentile based system from Fantasy Flight Games. It features combat, including sweet in-depth mechanics for heavy weapons, mass combat, and vehicular combat. Also it has a unique mechanic where nearly all characters get a fun (read:expendable) redshirt buddy called a Comrade. Your party goes on missions assigned by your commanding officers, *in theory* you are then supposed to be equipped with proper equipment for the assignment. Assuming your gear isn't lost or stolen you get to venture out to environments that are target rich and rife with opportunities for heroism or whatever else is needed to survive. For lore veterans: This campaign is takes place in FFG's "Spinward Front," against the "Severan Dominate". We are playing with the timeline a little to bring the events of the campaign closer to the current lore. The initial campaign follows the party through the invasion of a rebel planet while the imperium is on the precipice of a great upheaval. So come join the fun! Survival might not be guaranteed, but explosions are!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

All you will need is a working microphone, stable internet connection, a basic ability to use discord, an open mind and a desire for adventure to be able to play! If you are not comfortable with one of those things I would be happy to speak with you ahead of time and walk you through the setup process. If you want to go for gold you can also brush up on Warhammer 40,000 lore. It will help, but is not necessary.

What John brings to the table

I will construct visual aids on Tabletop Simulator to help with immersion and combat. Most gameplay will be theater of the mind, but where possible I will share my screen to provide visual aids for combats. Dice will be resolved remotely on an honor system basis, but I will provide free digital means to roll dice if you do not already have some.

Safety

How John creates a safe table

I maintain an inclusive Table and do my best to make sure everyone feels heard and their needs are met. Normally we will primarily use the Luxton Technique (a brief verbal check-in as the group assembles where you can state any major/likely trigger for yourself that I and the rest of the group will make a point of avoiding). In case something either is misunderstood or there is an issue during play that was not previously addressed it is entirely acceptable to state you are not comfortable with a given piece of content (you never have to justify why something is a trigger if you do not wish to but I DO need to know what about the content is triggering in order to best meet your needs). If something is particularly unexpected and upsetting taking breaks are also perfectly acceptable.
