About me

Back in the day, I played AD&D every Sunday at noon. The DMs were two brothers who took turns. I had never really been friends with them before that. We played until dinner. We were into it. I played Felris Quickfingers, Svirfneblin Jester. I could never figure out how anyone DMed the game and I never cared to learn. The same could be said for working in a middle school, which I had also sworn off ever doing, but found myself doing one day. I started social groups using DnD and Pathfinder. It was awesome teaching kids DnD and building relationships that way. Eventually, I switched to playing with friends and family during the pandemic. Now, I DM almost exclusively. I foolishly thought I would DM to inspire my players to also become DMs. In the meantime, I discovered I love the range of creativity this hobby brings out in us all, and all the ways it brings people together.

Creating your character

I would like to use the Roll20 character sheets and start at Level 1. If you want to create a character then transfer it into Roll20, you certainly may.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Welcome to the adventure! Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for our game and get the most out of the experience: 1. Technical Requirements Microphone: A working microphone is essential for clear communication. Headsets with built-in mics often work best, but even a phone's earbuds can do the trick. Discord: We’ll use Discord for voice communication. Please download the app or use the web version, and make sure you’re familiar with how to join voice channels. Roll20 Account: Create a free account at Roll20.net if you don’t already have one. This is where we’ll play, so make sure you can log in and navigate the interface. I’ll send you a game link before our session. Dice Options: You’re welcome to roll physical dice if you prefer (it’s more fun for some players!), but Roll20 also has an integrated dice roller if you don’t have your own. Optional: A webcam is not required, but you’re welcome to use one if you’d like! 2. Rules Familiarity Know the Basics: Please familiarize yourself with the general flow of tabletop RPGs and the D&D 5e rules. If you’re completely new, don’t worry! I’ll guide you through the essentials, but knowing some basics (like what a d20 roll means) will help things run smoothly. Quick Rules Resources: The free D&D Basic Rules are a great starting point. You can also watch short beginner tutorials on YouTube for a quick overview of gameplay. 3. Character Creation Session Zero: During our first session, we’ll create characters together. This will ensure everyone’s characters fit the setting and complement each other well. Come Prepared: Before Session Zero, spend some time thinking about: Species: What kind of being are you? Human, elf, dwarf, tiefling, or something else entirely? Class: Are you drawn to magic (wizard, sorcerer), combat (fighter, barbarian), stealth (rogue, ranger), or something in between (bard, cleric, paladin)? Backstory: Where does your character come from? What drives them? Consider these questions: Where did your character grow up? Why did they decide to become an adventurer? Do they have a personal goal or secret? Who or what is important to them? Backup Character: It’s a good idea to have a backup character concept in mind. Sometimes a particular class or idea doesn’t mesh as expected, and having a backup can save time and keep things fun. 4. Communication and Gameplay Etiquette Ask Questions: This is a beginner-friendly game, so don’t hesitate to ask for help or clarification during play. We’re here to have fun and learn together! Be Ready to Collaborate: Think about how your character might connect to others in the party. This helps build teamwork and enriches the story. Respect the Table: Everyone’s here to have a good time. Respect others’ ideas, roles, and time during gameplay. 5. If You’re Joining Mid-Campaign Contact me to confirm your starting level and where your character might fit into the story. I’ll help you integrate them seamlessly into the group.

What Jake Ware brings to the table

We will play on Roll 20, a VTT very similar to D&D Beyond Maps, but it lets me show you more and do more. We will build characters together in our first session, known as Session 0. Roll 20 will let you roll from the digital sheet, and you are welcome to use real dice if you wish. I tend to follow the rules to a T if I can, and as an educator for 23 years, I'm pretty good at saying no to rule bending. But I'll always work to make sure you can do anything within the rules! As far as roleplaying, feel free to use any style. I tend to use the first person and try to do all the voices best I can and embarrass myself to further encourage you, but there is no wrong way to operate your roleplay.

How Jake Ware creates a safe table

I keep things moving. I have space in the beginning in end for convo and hashing things out. As an educator, I am apt to facilitate issue resolution and encourage openness. You can expect to make friends.
