About the adventure

April 1st, 2001—Japan teeters on the brink of a new era. Technology has outshined old superstitions, forging connections through online forums, chatrooms, and budding platforms that turn once-niche communities into thriving hubs. Yet, with every new link in this modern world, an unseen force stirs—the supernatural. As old beliefs fade, manufactured fear seeps into the mainstream, unnerving those clinging to reality. Rumors grow among the few who remember the ancient ways: as society moves forward, who will become the Sorcerers to defend it? Who will rise as ancient vows are broken and new threats emerge?

How to prepare

🔧 Ensure you have enough time throughout the week to get the most out of this campaign. 🔧 I am available to respond in the afternoon till 11 PM EST, so I will often include 3 to 5 responses daily, if possible. 🔧 I tend to mirror the player I am roleplaying with, which can affect the amount of messages I provide and their detail unless a scene requires a certain amount of input on my end.

What I provide

🎨 Descriptive and Detailed Storytelling: I take great care in describing each action my players take, including their appearance and how the environment reacts to their actions. I enjoy making players the centerpiece of any given scenario, whether they're part of a larger canvas with their party or interacting with NPCs they've grown attached to. 🗺️ Custom Maps and Tokens: For the campaign, I use a mixture of online, free resources for maps that fit the setting. Additionally, I design maps digitally to enhance the campaign, especially for combat scenarios where I excel. I also create custom tokens for each character, NPC, and creature to provide a clear sense of appearance for individuals and creatures of the setting. 🌍 Living World: I treat each setting I GM as an open, living world. Unlike Westmarch-style campaigns, everything moves with or without the players in each session. This means NPCs, creatures, and environments are capable of growth and change, developing alongside the player characters. This approach allows for solo sessions, sister campaigns with an overarching plot, and a consistent and nuanced cast of characters, I find it provides more memorable experiences. ⚔️ Flexibility and Improvisation: Whether my players do something unexpected or a rule is misread or misunderstood, I prioritize two things: the rule of cool and improvisation. I often adapt my original plans to accommodate the whims of my players, enjoying the role of a reactive GM. I provide a variety of options and always leave the possibility for players to take their own route using the setting provided. 🎭 Player Expectations: Now, enough about me 😅. My only expectations for players are to be respectful and open-minded. Ultimately, it’s about your stories and your interactions with the world, creating your own adventures by exploring and engaging with the rich setting within the campaign. Therefore, create characters with ambition and a willingness to venture into the unknown to conquer this world and its challenges. I look forward to GM'ing for you and supporting your journey from zero to hero.

Gameplay details

Ensuring everyone feels comfortable and safe in my campaigns is my top priority. To achieve this, I use these safety tools: 🛠️Session 0: We'll have an initial session dedicated to discussing expectations, boundaries, and any personal concerns. This helps us establish a safe and inclusive environment from the start. 🔒Lines and Veils: We'll define clear lines (topics that are completely off-limits) and veils (topics that will be addressed indirectly) to maintain everyone's comfort throughout the campaign. ⏸️ Breaks: We'll schedule regular breaks during sessions to give everyone a chance to relax and reset, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all. 💬 We will be playing using the Discord platform for communication. I've custom-designed character sheets, courtesy of a friend, specifically for this campaign. 🎲 For dice rolls, we'll be using Avrae, Dice Maiden, or UnbelievaBoat. On my server, I prioritize fun and respectful communication, encouraging a creative and cooperative atmosphere.

How will character creation work

⛓💥To create a character for Broken Vows, we’ll start by rolling for stats—no pity system applies. ⛓💥Since the campaign is set in 2001, an era of artistic self-expression, be sure to reflect this in your backstory while considering your chosen background. ⛓💥The campaign begins with your character as a non-sorcerer at Level 0. At this stage, you won’t have any proficiencies beyond those provided by your race and background. Your starting hit points will be calculated as 4 + your Constitution modifier, and your equipment will be limited to mundane items. ⛓💥Once that’s done, we’ll start designing your Cursed Technique if you want to use something other than a canon technique. Note that clan-dependent techniques are off-limits, as is Maki/Toji HR. This campaign does include vessels, but they must be obtained in-game.
