About the adventure

It's a sweltering day in the city at the edge of the desert, and you find yourself drawn to the central well for a drink of water. Amidst the crowd of locals and travelers alike, you overhear a man pleading with passersby and offering a reward for help. Looking up, you realize the man is passing out flyers featuring the face of a little girl, and something within you stirs. Is it the desire for fame and fortune? Are you merely bored and intrigued? Or perhaps it's a constant, altruistic pull to help those in need? Whatever the reason, you find yourself drawn to learn more, and an unexpected adventure unfolds... This Dungeons and Dragons one-shot, inspired by the "Chasing Dreams" adventure from Roll and Play Press' "One Shot Wonders" book, will use the new 2024 Player's Handbook for character creation and general rules. This will be a Level 2 adventure that is specifically designed to be beginner-friendly!

Recruiting notes

At Worlds 4 All LLC, we try to balance the affordability of our games while also ensuring that our Game Facilitators are paid a living wage. For our in-person games, we offer a tiered-pricing model, no questions asked. While StartPlaying.games doesn't have a built-in model for tiered pricing, we hope to never turn anyone away for socio-economic reasons. If you'd like to join our game but the price feels too high, simply send us a message: we can adjust individual player pricing on the back-end once you've signed up!

How to prepare

At the very least, players will need access to a microphone, Discord, and a reliable internet connection with web browser access. Cameras on (at least most of the time) is highly encouraged for community building, though not required. You are welcome to bring food and drink to enjoy during the session, though I ask that you not imbibe or intake anything in excess that would alter your ability to effectively participate in the game. You do not need to read any rules in advance: everything will be explained organically during game play, and some reference guides (such as one for combat) will be provided. Again, if you want to create your own Level 2 character, you can by following the listed "Character Creation" rules. Otherwise, I will provide a variety of pre-generated ones that you can select from prior to the start of session. You can utilize either physical dice or a digital dice roller, depending on your preference, and I can provide you with a digital dice link if needed.

What I provide

I will provide the voice, text, and video chat channels through my professional Worlds 4 All Discord server, which is the main platform we will use for play. While I particularly love the creative freedom of "theater of the mind" storytelling, I use concept art from Pinterest, etc. to enhance our visual experience. For map-based combat and encounters, I'll provide a link to Owlbear Rodeo, which is a simple digital platform that requires no account setup or software downloads. I will definitely perform a variety of quirky voices and mannerism for NPCs, though I am certainly NOT a professional voice actor! I also definitely like to embrace the "Rule of Cool" when players get excited about helping me co-create scenes, and I'll use the "Rules as Written" to help guide us otherwise.

Gameplay details

Before session, I will send you a link to my "Session Zero Checklist" form, which includes my non-negotiables as a game facilitator dedicated to hosting safe spaces, as well as an opportunity for you to tell me a little about yourself, your accessibility needs, and your personal lines and veils. During the game, we will use a simple X, N, O system using private messages and/or the group chat. After the game, I'll ask each player to send me their "Stars & Wishes" to help me continuing improving as a facilitator.

How will character creation work

I have a variety of pre-generated Level 2 character sheets that I will happily provide for your use, or you can create your own. If you create your own, I ask that you share it with me AT LEAST THREE HOURS prior to session for my review. You can use a PDF character sheet or join a campaign link on DnD Beyond that I will provide. You can use any of the 2024 Player's Handbook materials and some additional 5e compatible species and classes (pending prior approval).
