About the adventure

This campaign will not start like your usual game of D&D. Instead of deciding your class, proficiencies, backgrounds etc. all at once, you will start as children at level 0. Over the course of several sessions, you will decide organically, through the turbulent, whimsical, domestic adventures of your childhood, the type of hero you will become when you reach level 1 at adulthood. For those new to D&D or TTRPGs, this will be an excellent learning opportunity to learn about all the nuts and bolts of your character sheet, and you'll have plenty of time and guidance as to the choices you'll make. For those more experienced, this will be an refreshing new way of creating a character that you will love and cherish. Writing a backstory is one thing, playing through your character's most important memories will bring an incredible sense of depth and attachment. This story will start in the port city of Ziwala, a local hub of trade and aquaculture in the Sultanate of Syrosia. A cosmopolitan melting-pot, merchants peddling exotic goods from far-off shores break bread with local fishermen hauling in their catch of the day. Merfolk trade sea cucumbers and stories of the deep with curious adolescents playing along white sand beaches after a hard day of work with their parents. Further inland, the cogs of the Sultan's industries turn faster and faster, threatening to tear the country apart by the seams. Far past the horizon, across the sea, the ruminations of a mad king threaten to upturn the balance of the entire world. And you're at home, with your friends and family, thinking about the kind of person you're going to grow up to be. While this campaign will take place in a homebrew universe I've been writing for since 2018, you will learn about the world around you at the same pace your characters do. No walls of text and hundred page lore documents you'll need to read.

About me

Hi there! I've been a forever GM by my own choice for six years now, developing a penchant for unique, idiosyncratic campaigns that focus on personal, heartfelt, and often very silly stories that focus on my players and their characters. I am a roleplay-heavy GM that reserves combat for important and dramatic moments. I'm a huge nerd about history, culture, religion, politics, & socioeconomics, with a particular focus on non-Western histories and the marginalized & oppressed. I'm a big fan of films, games, novels, & TV shows like Avatar The Last Airbender, Dimension 20, The Expanse, Disco Elysium, Chainsaw Man, Discworld, Fire Emblem, & The Hunger Games. I am from Indonesia, neurodivergent, and queer. I have a multitude of experience running games for people from a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, as well as with physical and mental disabilities and will do my best to ensure that anyone can have a seat at my table. In meatspace, I work as a tutor. If you ever wanna reach out, you can find me on Discord as "MehShotgun"; my user ID is 345564781438304266.

Character creation

Creating your character

As you'll be starting as level 0 children, your character sheet will start relatively sparse. You will have no skill proficiencies, classes, feats, spells, or equipment. The only thing you will need to decide on before the campaign starts is your character's name, gender, species, age (between 8 and 10 years old), and family background. During Session 0, you will roll for basic stats and for a dice pool used to upgrade your character's abilities down the line. Everything else will be decided organically and in the moment in future sessions. At every step of the way you will receive guidance, and you are by no means forced to develop your character in a way that you don't want them to. It is important to understand and be prepared that your character might not go down a path that you initially thought they would, and that's part of the fun! You may refer to and use resources from any D&D 5 and 5.5e (2024) sourcebook, as well as anything created by the legendary homebrewer LaserLlama. Further custom content should be run by me for approval.

The current party

Session 0 will be a paid session, as there is comparatively little we need to go over before the story begins! When you book this adventure (you will not be charged until we actually run through a session), you will receive a link to a short questionnaire about the kind of character you would like to start off as. I am more than happy to chat with about the campaign and will answer any questions you might have about it.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a verified account on Discord, a stable internet connection, and a working microphone. I also encourage my players to have a webcam on, but it's not a requirement. Character sheets can be created via the standard 5e/5.5e PDF (which will be provided) or 3rd party programs such as Dicecloud. You do not need to understand the rules of Dungeons and Dragons to play this campaign. Reading through the rules beforehand or already understanding them is certainly appreciated, however!

What Fikhar Sjahrazad brings to the table

We will primarily be playing on a private Discord server, with combat taking place over Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo. There will be a bot (Avrae) to facilitate dice-rolling on the Discord server. I like create my own custom maps as well as maps of the world, supplementing them with maps made by other creators. Characters will have distinct voices, but I am by no means a professional voice actor. I will be using a bot on Discord to play ambient music. I am a generally lenient and generous GM. Rules exist to facilitate the creation of a fun, collaborative story. It is always okay to ask if you can do something.

Homebrew rules

A non-exhaustive list of homebrew rules we follow: - Drinking a potion as a bonus action - Crunchy Crits - Grouped initiative I am a GM who is generous with my rules and understand them as a means of facilitating a story; if you have a cool idea, ask me about how it can work and I will engineer a mechanism for you to be able to do it.

Safety

How Fikhar Sjahrazad creates a safe table

I take safety very seriously and will accomodate my games for my players to the best of my ability. During session 0 we will cover the topics and themes for this campaign, and I will encourage my players to voice their opinions and concerns over the direction and story, publicly or privately. I tried to be as exhaustive as I could in the content warning list; not all topics will necessarily make an appearance in this campaign. During session 0, we will utilize the Deck of Player Safety, an online tool for players to anonymously flag common hot-button subjects that could be present in a game of Dungeons and Dragons. There will be a 15 minute break at the 2-hour mark in a session. At any point during a game, you may send me an "X" or "N" in private chat on Discord. An "X" is used to indicate that you are uncomfortable with whatever the current scene is, which we will skip over or rewind. An "N" is used to indicate that you may feel that we are approaching an uncomfortable scene, which will also be skipped over.
