About the adventure

[This D&D 5e (2014) campaign is designed for 3-5 characters. It is inspired by the penny dreadful publications and other classic tales of horror and mystery from the 1800s. The campaign follows the adventures of covert operatives as they investigate unexplained terrors that are inflicted upon an unsuspecting populace. In terms of modern fiction, a fitting comparison would be to imagine Supernatural, The X-Files, The Dresden Files, or Men in Black in a gothic, Victorian-inspired setting. (Please see 'Recruiting Notes' below for more information.)] In the sprawling city of Victoria - formerly London - the city rots beneath the weight of industry and indifference. Its wealthy dine on lace and legacy in gaslit manors, while its poor drown in ash and desperation. The air is thick with coal, the alleys with hunger, and the hearts of men with rot. Smoke is not the only thing that festers in the city's lungs. In forgotten corners and candlelit crypts, older evils move. Some are whispered of in nursery rhymes and penny dreadfuls. Others have no name at all. They come from across oceans, are hatched from forgotten depths, or crawl straight from nightmares. They feed on grief, madness, despair and flesh. These horrors are cloaked from mortal minds by the Veil: a shroud of arcana that binds human reason in blindness, denial and rationalization. The Veil ensures the innocent sleep soundly... until they do not wake. Yet not all eyes are closed. Within the broken stones of the city, a tattered remnant of the once-holy Templars wages a quiet war against the dark. They are neither saints, nor knights, nor scholars of renown. They are merely the Sighted: those cursed to see truth without derangement, and brave or broken enough to face it. Misfits bound by the prospect of ruin, they stand between the unseeing world and the things that scratch at its door. In their hands lies no grand prophecy, merely the resolve to die before they yield to darkness. This is their fight. Soon, it will be yours...

About me

Hello! I’m Erik, a husband, father, retired chef and, according to my wife, ‘OMG such a geek.’ I've had a passion and fascination (passionation?) for fantasy and adventure fiction since my mom thrust a novel into my hands when I was a wee lad. That was a slippery slope that led to the roleplaying section of the bookstore, and I've been a gaming hobbyist and storyteller ever since. I'm drawn to tabletop roleplaying because of the opportunity it provides for collaborative storytelling without predictable results. I love the 'cooperative opposition' dynamic that allows stories to unfold in ways that no one anticipated. We're all the storytellers - the players and game master - and we're working together to make the story interesting and fun and memorable. Thank you for your time! Please scroll down to read the ‘GM Style’ segment for more about me as a game master. Feel free to contact me with questions or interest about any of the one-shots or campaigns I'm offering, or - to my wife’s delight - just to remind me how much of a geek I am. Cheers!

Character creation

Creating your character

• Characters start at level 1 (or a level commensurate with the characters in an existing campaign). • I highly encourage that we have an open dialogue about character creation before you make any decisions. This will help ensure that your character is appropriate for the setting and to the other players/characters in the party. • Upon joining the adventure, you'll receive a DnD Beyond campaign link, a link to the ‘Tome of Creation,’ which provides detailed information regarding character creation, and a link to the ‘Tome of Knowledge,’ which provides world lore and setting information. • Most officially-published classes and subclasses will be permitted. 'Partnered Content' and Homebrew class requests can be discussed on a case-by-case basis. • Your decisions are not final. In my experience, character creation is more fun when it is a fluid process. I respect requests for reasonable character adjustments, especially for the first several sessions as you become more familiar and comfortable with your character, the setting, and my GM Style. It's important that you are playing a character you can enjoy.

The current party

• This adventure occurs weekly on Sundays @ 10:30AM Eastern Time USA • Everyone is welcome at my table when they arrive with a positive attitude and an open mind (or a closed mouth). I will not tolerate any racism, sexism, ableism or any other expression of discrimination, oppression or prejudice towards real-world persons or groups. I will not tolerate toxic, abusive, hostile or overly-argumentative behavior. • The adventure currently has 4 of 5 spots filled. Characters are currently level 4 and include a druid, fighter, rogue and sorcerer. Some players at this table are very new to D&D, so incoming veterans should be prepared to participate with patience and understanding. [Note: This game occurs very early for the game master. If you are a last-minute signup, please don't anticipate a response much earlier than gametime.] • I require that prospective new players interested in joining an existing campaign first observe one full session. This helps the player assess if they expect they will enjoy the narrative occurring 'on the table', and to observe the social dynamic and camaraderie occurring 'over the table'. There is no fee for this observation session. • Beginners are welcome at my table! I work hard to provide the patience necessary to help new players understand the game, and to give options and advice without taking away a player's agency to make decisions for their own character. • Regarding D&D (2024) and D&D (2014) Rules: This campaign will utilize D&D 5.0 (2014) rules.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need: • To complete a digital New Player Review: This is a questionnaire that I will provide upon your joining, which you can complete on your own time prior to the adventure. It reviews game conduct expectations and provides you an opportunity to communicate any sensitive conduct Lines and Veils you may have in writing. • A laptop, PC or other device capable of communicating on Discord and running the Roll20 web application. • A microphone with a minimal amount of disruptive background noise and the ability to clearly communicate via Discord voice chat. • A Discord account. • A basic DnD Beyond Account. (Paid Subscription Account Not Required) • A basic Roll20 Account. (Paid Subscription Account Not Required) • Kindness and the ability to work and play well with others.

What Erik brings to the table

I will provide: • For a new campaign, we will have a free, full-party Session 0 to get to know one another, discuss characters, party dynamics, and setting. We will discuss roleplay styles, gameplay preferences, request rule interpretations, homebrew rules, etc. A review of player conduct expectations and Lines and Veils will be included, as well. • A willingness to support new players in learning and understanding the intimidating world of tabletop roleplaying! • An 'open discord' policy to communicate with players about their character and the campaign during off-table hours. • A DnD Beyond Master Tier subscription, which provides my players access to all DnD source material relevant to the campaign (Player’s Handbook, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, etc.) • A Roll20 Virtual Tabletop experience that includes: ㅤ• Scene-setting art images. ㅤ• Custom encounter maps, with dynamic lighting when appropriate. ㅤ• Environmental music and ambience. • The Tome of Knowledge: A resource providing players with helpful information about the campaign setting: cultures, geography, history, religion, etc. • The Tome of Creation: A resource to aid players with character creation within the campaign setting. • For more information on what I provide as a GM, please see the 'GM Style' (not to be confused with Gangnam Style) section of my Startplaying GM profile: https://startplaying.games/gm/plyxlstyx

Homebrew rules

I utilize a fair share of homebrew tweaks and rules, most of which benefit the players and can be learned extemporaneously. If you are the type of player who needs every aspect of GM fiat catalogued and reviewed prior to participating, this is likely not the campaign for you.

Safety

How Erik creates a safe table

SAFETY TOOLS • Players will have an opportunity to establish any specific content from which they wish to avoid exposure via a system of Lines and Veils. • As we play, players are encouraged to express any discomfort they are feeling with any game content, even if that content was not explicitly indicated via Lines and Veils. • Players may also request a pause to step away from the game at any time without judgment. SENSITIVE CONTENT / SUBJECT MATTER If the lives and wellbeing of families, loved ones and innocents can't be used as motivation for the protagonists in a story, we severely limit what stories can be told. Our heroes don’t just work to prevent bad things from happening, they also work to stop bad things that are happening. That necessitates a narrative in which those things are described, or at the very least mentioned. I respect that everyone has their line in the sand, and I wish to avoid crossing that line. Due to the constantly evolving creative process and the improvisational nature of roleplay, however, I'm uncomfortable claiming to have provided an exhaustive list of content warnings for what might appear in a narrative. I do not use sexual assault or child abuse as a narrative device. For any other reasonably-anticipated subject matter that you are uncomfortable with, please take advantage of the Lines and Veils system so that I am aware of your restrictions and can work to keep those topics veiled or excluded.
