About me

Hello! I'm Vanessa, I'm a 27 year old trans woman in the New York/New Jersey area. For capitalism I'm a lawyer, but for fun I mostly play games - video games, board games, tabletop games, escape rooms, you name it. I've been a huge nerd since I was a little kid, whether that meant playing games reading books, playing games, or performing onstage, but the main thing that's always driven me and connected them all is a love of stories. That same love of stories was what started to pique my interest in Dungeons & Dragons back in middle school, but like many, I never really managed to find people who were as interested as I was or willing to put in the time to learn the game. Through high school and college, I tried to pick it up but it never really worked out. But by the time I got to law school, I decided I was going to make this happen no matter what, so I read through the core rulebooks, gathered up a group of people who knew nothing about D&D, and started DMing my first game. Since then, I've been hooked. I've run a handful of campaigns ranging from 3 all the way up to 8 players, as well as a few one-shots, have been a player in a few campaigns and one-shots, and have taught over a dozen people all about the wonderful world of tabletop gaming and D&D. When I'm not playing, I spend a frankly disturbing amount of my free time watching actual plays like Critical Role and Dimension 20, both because I enjoy them but also because I'm always fascinated by and learning more from different DM and player styles. In short, D&D has become very important to me and is something I truly love. I decided to make a profile here to meet people who want to dive in and be invested in a game as much as I do. Whether you have no experience or have played since you were a kid, if you're passionate and excited, I'd love to get to play a game with you. Looking forward to adventuring with you soon!

Character creation

Creating your character

We'll build characters together as part of session 0 (if you have a prebuilt character you want to play, that's likely fine and we can sort out the details during session 0). I am pretty much open to anything - official source books, Unearthed Arcana, homebrew, you name it. If something seems crazy or too overpowered, I might propose some tweaks to scale it down, but I will rarely ever nix an idea completely. I'll also do a rules overview session during session 0! So no need to read up ahead of time, though you are obviously more than welcome to.

The current party

Hi everyone! This game is specifically for new players only, so once you request a spot, please send me a message confirming that you are new to D&D. Thanks!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

- Make sure you have a webcam/mic - Make accounts on Roll20 and D&D Beyond - Make an account on whichever video conferencing platform we decide to use - Come ready to have fun!

What Vanessa brings to the table

Players joining my game can expect a fun but low-pressure environment. I generally follow the rules as written as a starting point, but am very willing to tweak or improvise from there so we can do whatever is the most fun for everyone. I like to set the tone and get into roleplay, so there will be music, voices, maps, and more. I generally like either Zoom or Discord for our video chat, Roll20 for battle maps, and D&D Beyond for character sheets (I have all content on D&D Beyond and will share it with everyone in the party). Overall, my games should be a time where you can just have a good time!
