About me

I'm KevTyler GM, and I've been enjoying the art of collaborative storytelling as a game master for under two years. I have been playing TTRPGs on and off for over 15 years. My specialty lies in Dungeons and Dragons 5e and a unique homebrewed game system set in the magical world of Harry Potter. My campaigns are known for their roleplay-heavy focus, with epic quests and player story arcs that weave into larger, immersive worlds. While I incorporate combat as applicable within the story world to keep the excitement alive, I do not focus on creating combat-heavy games. I also enjoy sprinkling in elements of horror when my players are up for it as well as nods and hints to elements of our world. This can include creating NPCs that are basically a character from a beloved book or show, all the way to mimicking light-hearted events that have taken place in the real world. What sets my GM style apart is my ability to cater to both beginners and experienced players at the same time. Whether you need clear guidance through the story or prefer a sandbox environment to explore your character's potential, I'm here to facilitate that experience. My approach ensures that all players, regardless of their experience level, feel engaged and immersed in the adventure. One of my most memorable moments as a GM involved a detailed cave and tunnel system beneath a city. Instead of sneaking through or fighting their way in as I had anticipated, my players joined a fighting competition, forging unexpected alliances with a criminal organization. This twist not only provided a new way out of the caves but also established a strong support system for future encounters. I prioritize player feedback and ensure that everyone is having a good time by starting with a session zero. This sets the tone for transparency and the use of safety tools, creating a foundation of open communication. I listen actively to my players, embracing the collaborative nature of TTRPGs, and strive to maintain a safe and inclusive environment. Regular check-ins and feedback sessions help me continuously improve and tailor the experience to suit my players' needs. Join me for an unforgettable journey where your choices shape the story, and every session brings new surprises. Let's create epic tales together!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation in this homebrew TTRPG begins with players choosing to create their character during Session 0 or beforehand via our Discord and Google Drive setup. Using a specially designed character sheet available for download, players engage in a step-by-step character creation process. This includes determining ability points, crafting their character's physical description and background, selecting their primary school of Magic from options like Charms or Magizoology, choosing the Hogwarts House they want their character in, and deciding on their character's name. During Session 0, we dive deeper into these elements, clarifying the mechanics behind ability points and the impact of magical lineage on House selection. Players also express their initial wand desires, which will be finalized during gameplay. This session serves as a comprehensive guide, ensuring all players understand their character's foundations before embarking on this magical journey together.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A webcam is preferred if possible, but not necessary. You will need a mic/headset or option to hear and speak directly from your computer or laptop. You will want to have a roll20 account, a Discord account, and the ability to access Google Drive if a link is shared.

What KevTyler GM brings to the table

As your game master, I bring a wealth of tools and expertise to ensure your journey into the magical world of Hogwarts is unforgettable. Using Roll20, and access to a vast library of 10,000 maps, I strategically deploy these maps to enhance immersion. Custom tokens (identifiers used within Roll20 to visually show where your characters are located on a map) are crafted collaboratively with players to perfectly fit the setting. I also use Roll20's token customization to ensure easy access to character attributes and inventory details. Beyond visuals, I foster a deeply engaging narrative where player characters' backgrounds and aspirations seamlessly weave into the tapestry of Hogwarts' early years. I specialize in adapting on the fly, maintaining a rich story world that allows for player-driven exploration or guided adventures. In our Discord hub, clarity reigns supreme. From rules to expectations and safety tools, everything is transparently communicated. Off-screen, I keep our dialogue alive, available to answer questions, provide additional clarity of story events, and have a place for feedback to the game master so that there is cohesion between sessions. Your character's growth is paramount. I use Hogwarts' semesters as a baseline for character progression (character attribute upgrades). Throughout regular sessions, players evolve not just in spells and potions, but in mastering the intricacies of magical creatures and refining their chosen school of magic. Above all, I ensure every session is a joyous escapade. Whether you're a seasoned wizard or new to roleplaying, I cultivate an inclusive environment where every voice finds its place, NPCs (non-playable characters that are used by the gamemaster) encourage interaction, and each player's journey leaves an indelible mark on the magical world we co-create. Join me on this spellbinding adventure. Let's craft your Hogwarts legacy together!

Safety

How KevTyler GM creates a safe table

In our TTRPG sessions, the safety and comfort of every player are paramount. During Session 0, we will carefully review our safety tools and set clear expectations. Central to this is the use of Leins and Veils, powerful tools that allow us to establish boundaries and ensure a safe environment for all. These will be discussed and implemented either during Session 0 or as needed between sessions. While I continue to familiarize myself with Roll20, I plan to utilize the XN&O cards available there, alongside an option for players to send private messages if they encounter any technical issues or wish to remain anonymous with their concerns. Another essential aspect of our safety framework is the Stars and Wishes method. This allows players to highlight moments they enjoyed during the session (Stars), and provide constructive feedback or express desires for future sessions (Wishes). This ensures that everyone's experiences and preferences are heard and respected. Effective and open communication from the outset will be pivotal in creating an environment where everyone can have fun while feeling secure and valued. Your well-being and enjoyment are at the heart of our gaming experience.
