This is a GM who can handle both serious in-depth character creation for a Vampire game, and the adventures of a bunch of Call of Cthulhu desperados who'll do things like ride in a Bentley with a ghoul in the middle back seat. These games are like the best of what you'll see on YouTube.

His games have a unique atmosphere. Your heart will thunder in you chest and pulse beat in your throat when things start go wrong as he reveals his story telling skills. The actions/scenes are very alive thanks to the NPCs and insane characters he controls and portrays. I hope we play together for long.

He's just welcoming and accommodating and comes very prepared with props etc. Great at making people feel welcome, making the rules approachable, adding music, etc.

I've now finished the prologue chapter to a campaign with Mikael and enjoyed every minute of it. He's a fantastic scene setter and helps keep things moving along at a good pace with plenty of space for players to own their fate. If you happen to see one of his games and think it might be your thing I'd absolutely recommend you give it a go, well worth your time!

Truly a fantastic GM, knows the rules and lore of the games he runs and makes sure that everyone has a good time each session. He really allows our group to do some interesting methods to solve problems we come across and has flexibility when running a published campaign. He's friendly and approachable, laid back and allows for rule of cool a lot. Really love being in his campaign, it's well worth staying up late (in my time zone) to game with him and our group. Updated to add that his games are very much a safe space for people with safety tools used correctly and he fosters an environment where you can feel it's ok to speak up about safety and boundaries. The games he runs are often dark such as Call of Cthulhu and World of Darkness, so it's really important to have them in place, which he does. I appreciate his attitude towards safety and inclusiveness in the games and as the sole female playing in the game currently I feel very safe.

Character creation
Creating your character

Characters start out as basic, fledling vampires, about to take their first steps into vampire society. The campaign is designed for 7 clans of the Camarilla, so pick one of those! The characters have to be able to work together for years (in-game), so while players are encouraged to come up with a concept, we work things through together during session 0 to make sure that the group can work as a coterie.

The current party

Your PC will: 1. Have a clear motivation. 2. Be able to collaborate effectively with other party members. 3. Have a foil within the group: someone will complement your weaknesses or serve as a friendly rival. 4. Have a well-defined personality weakness. Use the 7 deadly sins for inspiration. 5. Have a well-defined backstory. Background Story Requirements: 1. Your story must align with the setting. 2. Your character's backstory should not exceed their current level of power. 3. Be concise, no longer than one page. 4. Include a list of three enemies, three allies, and three acquaintances that are relevant to your character's story.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

Players need a microphone. Players do not need to read the rules ahead of time. Feel free to consider these questions as you think about your character concept: Appendix: ”Lazybone” for role interview WHEN AND WHERE ARE WE? Age, continent, space, time, etc. WHAT’S YOUR NAME? HOW OLD ARE YOU? FAMILY PICTURE? Parents, siblings, family? Do you live together with someone? Why? Why not? Do you have any pets or children? Do you want to have children? What do your parents work with? WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? HOW DID YOU GROW UP? What did you want to be when you became an adult? WERE YOU A LONELY CHILD OR DID YOU HAVE LOTS OF FRIENDS? Was it easy for you to get friends? Did you have a best friend? Did you harass anyone or were you the one harassed? WHAT DO YOU WORK WITH? Who’s your employer? Why did you choose this profession? Do you like it? If not, what have thought about to do about it? HOW DO YOU LIVE? Where? HOW DO YOU DRESS YOURSELF? Why? WHAT IS IN YOUR POCKET? ARE YOU A WISE HUMAN? Why? Are you confident or do you lack self confident? HOBBIES? Relation to culture, sports, music, literature, etc? LOVE? Are you or have you been passionately in love for real? Who, or why not? Do you love your parents, friends, children, etc? Are you a romantic? WHAT HAPPENS WHEN/IF YOU FAIL WITH SOMETHING? How do you react towards yourself and others? WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST MISTAKE? WHAT DO YOU REGRET MOST IN YOUR LIFE? Had you been able to act differently? Why didn’t you? Will you do that? Is there a chance to make things right again? Is there someone you can blame? Who? What should s/he have done? Why isn’t it your fault? Why do you go free? WHAT COULD MAKE YOU CHANGE YOUR LIFE? If you hadn’t turned up the way you did, what would you have done with your life instead? FRIENDS TODAY? Whom can you talk with about your problems? Is anyone allowed to come near you? Territories and limits? WHOM WOULD YOU NEVER FAIL? Do you have a code of honour? Have you failed anyone or anything sometime? WHICH IS THE GREATEST INJUSTICE YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO? By whom? Why? WHAT KIND OF LIFE PHILOSOPHY DO YOU LIVE BY? Religion? Code of honour? Life ambitions? WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF? Death? Pain? Love? WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY? WHAT IS YOUR MOST IMMEDIATE DESIRE/GOAL? WHAT IS YOUR MOST IMMEDIATE STRUGGLE/BARRIER? WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST DEFENSE FOR YOUR CHARACTER AND HIS/HER ACTIONS? IF YOU WERE ALLOWED TO, JUST ONCE, SAY WHATEVER YOU WANTED TO SOMEONE, WITHOUT GETTING ANY NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES OUT OF IT, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY AND TO WHOM? WHAT DO YOU WANT? WHAT DO YOU NEED?

How Mikael Hellstrom creates a safe table

I will send out a link to the lines and veils document. During Session 0, we go over the group's document and discuss lines and veils in more detail to clarify so that everyone understands terminology the same way and examine examples of what might go and what might not. We'll check in which each other continuously during the campaign through the Discord channel, etc. This game is focused on exploring the dark side of humanity, for both the character and society. Be advised of this when signing up. During Session 0, we will set down appropriate Chronicle Tenets, and Convictions for your Character. The Tenets and Convictions will be designed to underline your PCs struggle with the Beast, not to make it easier to get away from that struggle.
