Chains of Asmodeus – sail the River Styx from levels 10-20 – TUE

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

So, you've sold your soul. Yeah, big deal—every warlock in D&D can say the same, and most never have to face the consequences. The perks of being a one-shot character. But consequences there are, my friend. Eternal damnation is, in fact, worse than it's billed as. In the Nine Hells, you thrive or you die—there's no margin in between. And if not for just you...haven't you heard? Your loved one got tricked out of their soul, too. Is it worth it to face an early grave in Hell itself for the chance to rescue a soul from the very same? And even if you manage that...how exactly were you planning to convince Asmodeus, Overlord of the Nine, to even let you leave? Chains of Asmodeus is a module for high-level characters created by the legendary video game storywriter James Ohlen, of Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Knights of the Old Republic fame. Sail down the River Styx through all nine layers of Hell in search of that which was lost. Along the way, encounter dangerous dealmakers and infernal warships; fugitive hags and fallen angels; mortals very much like and very much unlike yourself; and, of course, none other than the archdevils of the Nine themselves, from frozen Levistus to immortal Asmodeus. (He is on the cover of the book, after all.) Neither survival nor success are guaranteed in this odyssey—and even if you live, you may regret the price. Sign on to take the chance. Oh, and don't forget to do that thing that your benefactor who helped you get here in the first place wanted. You know, just while you're at it.

How to prepare

Players should have a microphone, a stable Internet connection, and access to Discord and Roll20. Beyond that, just bring your character sheet and a good attitude.

What I provide

The magic ✨ I also have the player resources books on Roll20 for character creation using official content, as well as a Google Drive folder full of official references and curated third-party publications for the homebrew aficionados.

Gameplay details

Chains of Asmodeus is a story of personal stakes. The fate of the world isn't at risk; the titular archdevil isn't about to destroy existence and only you can stop it. You just want to undo a mistake, and are willing to go to extremes to try. That means that your character is one who is flawed and who makes those mistakes. They will face temptation, and sometimes may give into it. They may not even be a particularly good person—this is literal Hell, after all. In character creation, we'll seek to strike the balance between a character who is interesting and flawed while also above the table being a fun character for everyone to have in the story. For safety tools, lines and veils live in a handout on Roll20, while the X card is drawn from a virtual deck of cards on Roll20.
