The Rebuilding: After the Reaper War | Mass Effect
Mass Effect 5e | Campaign
About the adventure
Set after the events of Mass Effect 3, the players and GM will put their own spin on what happens after the Reaper War. Not only will players have to contend with a semi-post-apocolyptic setting, where traveling between star systems is now exceedingly hard without the mass relays, there is a new threat encroaching on the galactic community. The players will decide if they will fight and whom they will fight for. They may research ancient Reaper technology and risk another Reaper invasion to deal with the new threat, or they may side with the new threat and agree with its goals. No matter what the players may choose, it will result in a grand adventure spanning most of the Milky Way and a bit beyond, visiting beloved points of interest from the games and books. This game is Mass Effect with a touch of Firefly. Mass Effect 5e is used, but will have homebrewed additions to fill out the world.

Ryan is creative and an amazing world builder. He is welcoming and friendly. Open to new ideas and different kinds of players. A great DM for both beginners just starting out and seasoned players. He can make DnD in the world of any anime, video game, or book. If you play multiple games with him you will see how games and worlds interconnect. I always recommend him to freinds.
This GM can build a heck of a world for players regardless of the story. Characters have in depth backgrounds and each one a unique personality. GM allows for players to build their own characters without very much in the way of restrictions. GM also enjoys helping new players with character building and is willing to answer questions to help get people started. Overall would recommend giving this GM a chance to introduce you to interesting stories and amazing world building.
Ryan has been the best DM I have ever had. I've done several long term campaigns with him and each and every one has had me blown away with just the immensity of his worldbuilding. Every campaign I've done with him has extremely memorable adventures that get you incredibly invested, especially since every choice you make matters, and he leaves the choice completely up to the players. In game time matters. Traveling to one town can mean missing something else that happens in another town, giving weight to the choices you make. And basically all choices and events have lasting consequences for good or bad and changes everything that follows. Every story feels like it truly belongs to you instead of a scripted story. I haven't had a session with any other DM that made me feel that a fraction as much. My friends and I once spent almost every free moment between two sessions discussing and debating what the heck we were going to do to make sure a favorite NPC would live after an intense cliffhanger. Don't expect black and white characters of good and evil with this DM unless it’s a short campaign or a one-shot. When he has time to build the story, all the NPC's and governments feel like real people and real societies. As such, nothing is the obvious choice. We've had to handle questions of morality, what deserves forgiveness, corruption for noble causes but questionable means. I love the complexity and the challenge of deciding what choice I would make, what choice my character would take. Mechanically, he mostly works with slightly modified mechanics from the standard, but they have all been very easy to work with and streamline the playing best for each world. In my experience, each one has made playing much more enjoyable and clear so players don’t need to be flipping through pages of notes in the middle of a fight. He also always works with players if they come up with an idea or action he doesn’t expect. As long as an action is reasonable or theoretically possible within the context of the game, it is on the table. Without exaggeration or exception, he is the best DM I have ever had.
I've been in Ryan's sci-fi campaign for 3 years now. Most systems in his campaign are homebrew, and Ryan allows great flexibility in how players can use their spells. I played as a mythical knight who specializes in mind reading, water magic, and sword magic (like Gilgamesh from the Fate series). With sound reasoning and right conditions, Ryan will allow you to do some insane stunts. For example, I could create a flood (almost like Bible-style) and clear out waves of enemies in an instant. However, the reason that I was allowed to do that was because I had absorbed a large amount of magic power from the planet in the prior expedition before the assault on the enemy's base. Because of his game designer background, you can expect plenty of balancing tweaks and changes to the system that will make your adventure a lot easier. I highly recommend Ryan as the DM to new players.

How to prepare
You will need a microphone and a discord account. New players are welcome to join with zero experience but please contact me before session zero. If you're not familiar with Mass Effect, read or watch a few videos about the lore. You don't need a comprehensive knowledge of all the lore but a basic understanding would be helpful.
What I provide
I live and I die by the Rule of Cool. Combat will be quite tactical but more in a puzzle sense and not grindy-tactical. I use ambient music and a quite a bit of theater of the mind. I do characters with distinct speaking styles and sometimes, but not often, will give them a unique accent or character voice. We may flip between drawn maps and theater of the mind.
Gameplay details
Most of the tags may not come up based the players take the story, but these are things with a strong likelihood of being mentioned. We will have a lines and veils and triggers discussion during session 0, and if you want that to be a private conversation let me know. After sessions I always check in with my players about how they're feeling and how the session went. If you have any concerns feel free to message me.
