About the adventure

There is trouble in the town of Byroden! Goblin attacks, people missing, and bandits harrowing the roads from Kymal. Something seems to be stirring as nightly fights between two mysterious factions are breaking out in many of the larger cities across the northern part of the continent in a struggle for control of the underbelly of society. Meanwhile, war is brewing between the Hobgoblin Iron Authority and the forces of Emon. Can you help stop the goblin attacks on this small village? What is behind some of the nightly struggles between gangs of thieves? Who is behind the sudden increase in bandit attacks along the roadways? Why are strange cultists making their way north towards Kymal and beyond? In this campaign you will: Confront sorcerers and necromancers to discover their plans. Chase bandits to save people and end their raiding the trade routes. Uncover the factions who fight for control of the thieves, cutthroats, and assassins. Engage with town, village, and city leaders to help put an end to the strife which terrorizes the citizens. Unmask the cultists who aim to bring about a new calamity upon the lands. Travel beyond the prime material to end a ritual which could bring about a new cataclysm. This is a level 2 to 20 campaign set in Critical Role's Setting of Exandria. The base adventure will take you around most of Tal'Dorei and into Issylra. Character backstories will be used to expand the plots currently threatening the lands. Travel to Wildemount or Marquet is also a clear possibility, depending upon player backgrounds, goals, and objectives. Knowledge of Critical Role or the setting is not needed to participate and enjoy this campaign. Beginners welcome!

Recruiting notes

This campaign is designed to run from level 2 to level 20 and will take you around the continent of Tal'Dorei and beyond. No prior knowledge of the Critical Role setting is required. Current Party is at level 4 and consists of a Blood Hunter, a Way of the Kensei Monk, an Arcane Trickster Rogue, and a Grave Domain Cleric. They are currently trying to find out who kidnapped a prominent craftswoman in the city of Kymal. I do use backstories to enhance the story, intertwine the characters into the events which are happening, and to provide some opportunities to explore additional regions and places. This is a pretty open campaign, with action happening around the characters and their involvement directly impacting the progression of the plots. The activities of adversaries and allies alike will be driven by the actions of the party. Pre-generated characters are available and can be customized as you wish. A wide selection of compendiums are available on Roll20 for character creation and options, both official and 3rd party materials. If you have any questions about the campaign, feel free to message me on Startplaying or on Discord at Oginme.

Additional details

How to prepare

Please have a microphone, headset or headphones, and stable internet access. An account on Roll20 and Discord will be required to play. Information on the setting of Exandria is available on the discord server and in the game on Roll20. I make myself available to discuss your character concepts and help to fit it into the setting/adventure while maintaining your vision for the character.

What I provide

Game play will be on Roll20 where I bring custom maps, extensive handouts, varied artwork and tokens, ease of use token macros and mods, and other source materials to make game play fun and immersive. On Discord, I have an established library of ambient music and sounds to increase immersion. Game summaries and lore are posted for all players to reference in and out of sessions. I have a focus on story and a willingness to work with the players to have their characters do cool things. The combats are thematic and can be intense at times, but I do not constantly challenge the players with a lot non-story related encounters. Character backstories are mined to weave in personal flavor into the tale we create together. I love to do improvisational role play with the players as they interact with my NPCs who are not single dimensional.

Gameplay details

Session 0 will cover table rules, cooperative play, the campaign and setting, lines and veils, open questions, and character creation. During play, safety cards are on the VTT for anyone to invoke if a topic comes up which deserves discussion. Play will stop immediately and we will reframe, replay, and/or rework the story to avoid any issues within the campaign. If the issue is between players we will break and discuss the issues and possible resolutions. After each session, I remain available to discuss the session and make sure everyone is on-board with the direction we are going. I am available out of the sessions to discuss any issues which may come up and find a solution which will attempt to alleviate any issues.

How will character creation work

Character creation will happen during session 0 with the players rolling cooperatively to develop an array which all may choose from. The method will involve the players each rolling a d6 in groups of four. We will do this eight times to generate 8 ability scores. These scores will be paired highest to lowest, second highest to second lowest, etc. This will generate four pairs, from which the players may select any three pairs to use for the character ability scores. Characters will start at level 2 and are estimated to achieve level 20 by the end of the campaign.
