About the adventure

The town of Phandalin lies nestled in the northern shadow of the Sword Mountains. Centuries ago, Phandalin was a prospering community, renowned throughout the Sword Coast due to its proximity to a mystical mine known as Wave Echo Cave. However, tragedy eventually struck when bandits overran the village, leaving it in ruins and causing the location of Wave Echo Cave to be lost to history. Over the past few years, settlers have finally begun to rebuild Phandalin, and it has slowly been returning to its former glory. The only thing that's missing is the profit and sorcery that once stemmed from Wave Echo Cave. That is, unless a certain dwarf and ragtag group of adventurers has anything to say about it! But you aren't the only ones searching for the mine, and looming on the horizon is a far more sinister shadow...

About me

I've got a kind of "Catatouille" situation going on. That is, a cat controls me from under a hat and another types out nonsense on my keyboard while they plot to take over the world. They only keep me around because I can speak Common. Cat control notwithstanding, my first experience with D&D was when I was in college at the ripe old age of 18. We were playing 4E, so I'm sure you can understand how I didn't play another tabletop game for a while... More recently, however, discovering the joys of being able to play RPGs online, with people from all over, got me back into it. Eventually I decided that I wanted to run my own games, learned about all the cool things that Foundry lets me do, and that's kind of where we're at now! I started running games with D&D 5E, but have found myself getting a little bored with the system, and am branching out to as many other systems as I can handle!

Character creation

Creating your character

A free Session Zero will include everything pertaining to the general nature of the campaign, as well as a discussion on any topic that is off limits or sensitive for all players. Session 0 will also be about character creation; we'll be starting at Level 1 and using Point Buy. Character creation and all leveling up will be done through D&D Beyond. No need for you to own any specific D&D books; I will share my owned books, and if there are any that I don't have that are needed for your character idea, I'll buy them! That said, any non-Wizards of the Coast content (i.e., Critical Role) is subject to my approval upon discussion.

The current party

The party is currently level 6 and comprised of an Ancients Barbarian, a Battlemaster Fighter, a Paladin/Wild Magic Sorcerer, and an Armourer Artificer. A brief summary of the story so far - the party was hired by a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker to escort a wagon-load of mining equipment to the town of Phandalin, southwest of Neverwinter. Along the way, they were ambushed by goblins. After tracking them back to their hideout, the party learned that their attackers were part of a larger host of goblinoids and they've taken Gundren hostage. It turns out that Gundren may know the location of Wave Echo Cave, a lost mine that contains a vast wealth of both minerals and magic. After a long quest, the party successfully tracked down Gundren and Wave Echo Cave, having overcome driders, dragons, and even aspects of vengeful gods on the journey. After all was said and done, all seemed well in Phandalin upon the party's return to the town. But a new threat reared its head, with implications of far greater danger lurking just out sight. The party has since set out on an expedition to the Sword Mountains, hoping to find answers in an ancient duergar mining outpost, now home to a group of goblins much more unique than the ones they've fought before...

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Sessions will be run through Discord for voice communication, so you will need a Discord account and some sort of mic (even if it's just your phone). You will also need an account on D&D Beyond for character creation and management upon leveling up. Aside from that, you only need an internet browser with a stable connection. Basic knowledge of how to play D&D is preferred, as is going through the basic Foundry tutorial, although this is to be more considerate of your fellow players. I'll gladly walk you through everything you need to know!

What Ryan brings to the table

I use a highly automated Foundry tabletop (this makes your life easier!) that comes with animations and sound effects for weapons and spells; music for ambience and combat; and professionally made animated maps. Combat will almost always be meant as a challenge, but not a slog. I follow Rules as Written as a base template for playing, but will always be willing to break a rule if it's more interesting! And if you ever take issue with or are concerned about a ruling, let me know so we can compromise!

Homebrew rules

1 - All potions are a bonus action, but during combat, healing potions may be used as an action to regain the maximum potential HP value offered by that potion. 2 -If you cast Vicious Mockery and have an insult or joke that makes me laugh, the target's roll is an auto fail and the damage roll is doubled. 3 - Surprise is heavily modified. Instead of not taking a turn in round 1 of combat, surprised creatures have disadvantage on initiative rolls as well as all attack rolls and saving throws (during the first round). Attacks rolls made against surprised creatures have advantage, and saving throws caused by a surprised creature are made with advantage during the surprise round. 4 - Everybody gets Inspiration at the top of every session. Inspiration allows for making one roll with advantage OR a reroll where you must keep the new roll.

Safety

How Ryan creates a safe table

This is meant to be a pretty chill game, but will include elements of sensitive topics. I will compile a list of anything that all players need to avoid during Session 0 to make sure everyone remains comfortable. While I allow swearing, keep it PC and inclusive. Accidents may happen regarding making one of your fellow players uncomfortable, but there will be a zero-tolerance policy for repeated (re: more than once) or deliberate instances of this.
