About the adventure
Between the Wasteland and Sky is a cinematic, character-focused science fiction story set in the shattered star system of New Eden, where the powerful live in comfort on the Core Worlds, and everyone else fights to survive in the Outer Reaches. The war is over, the peace is fragile, and the galaxy is held together by thin promises, backroom deals, and corporate control. You are the crew of the Stellar Nomad—a ship held together by duct tape, desperate paydays, and stubborn loyalty. Out here, you're not just running cargo or dodging bounties. You're running from your past, chasing ghosts, and trying to matter in a galaxy that doesn’t care if you burn out. This is a story about broken people making impossible choices in a broken world. It’s about fugitives, believers, outlaws, and idealists navigating crumbling empires, ancient secrets, and the ghosts of dead civilizations. Our game explores themes like redemption, survival, legacy, and what it means to find or forge hope when everything is rigged against you. Some sessions are quiet and introspective. Others dive headfirst into desperate shootouts, high-stakes heists, or tense negotiations with warlords and zealots. The tone leans toward gritty and cinematic, with splashes of dark humor, emotional intensity, and the occasional cosmic horror. You don’t need to be a sci-fi expert to play, just bring a love of storytelling, flawed heroes, and the kind of messy, improvised camaraderie that only happens when your crewmate’s got their boot on the engine while you try to hotwire a life support relay. Whether you’re brand new to RPGs or a seasoned roleplayer, this game thrives on collaboration and player-driven choices. Your actions shape the galaxy. Your failures have consequences. And sometimes, just staying alive is a victory. If you enjoy Firefly, Mass Effect, The Expanse, or Cowboy Bebop, and you want to tell a story where characters matter more than laser guns, then welcome aboard. The stars are wide. The crew is complicated. And the next job is always just one bad decision away.

About me
Hey there, I’m Mike! I’ve been running games for over a decade, and if there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I love telling stories with people. I’m the founder of unMadeGaming, a tabletop community I started back in 2015 with some friends, a basement, and way too many snacks. What began as a casual hobby has grown into live shows, podcasts, and game design projects, but at the end of the day, my favorite thing is still sitting down with a group and rolling dice together. I run games that are story-first and character-driven, with plenty of room for improvisation and player creativity. I like to keep the tone “beer ’n’ pretzels” casual, but I also know when to lean into drama, mystery, or horror to really make a session memorable. Expect humor, twists, and moments where your characters truly shine. When I’m not GMing here on StartPlaying, you might catch me on Twitch or YouTube running shows, or writing for my homebrew settings like Glenbrook (Tales from the Loop). I’m also working on a brand-new TTRPG built on the Year Zero System. If you’re looking for a GM who will bring energy, creativity, and just the right amount of chaos to the table, I’d love to run a game for you. Grab some dice, bring your ideas, and let’s make something unforgettable together.

Creating your character
Character creation for Cypher System is incredibly fast and simple. Players can create their characters on their own during session 0 or a few minutes before the session, but they are encouraged to involve the GM to help integrate the character into the world.
