About the adventure
Tensions seethe in your homeland, the isle of Gwendia. Conflicts at the borders of Gwendian nations are growing hotter, and nearly every week now there is a skirmish at one border or another. The raids of the Northmen on Gwendian shores are becoming more frequent and more violent. The dwarves have retreated to their highland strongholds, beseiged by their enemies—and rumors say those enemies have unearthed unwholesome things in the tunnels beneath the mountains. For the first time in centuries, a dragon has been sighted flying in Gwendian skies—now secret dragon cults plot unrest in the cities and towns. Ancient rituals, once thought lost forever, have been rediscovered, but their eldritch power may bring forth evil shadows rather than giving hope to a hopleless land. The day draws nearer when one or more of these tensions will boil over, throwing Gwendia into chaos. Which path will your character follow? Will you answer one of these challenges, or some other crisis drawn from your original character background? No matter what, your character will be sorely tested, but gain a chance to become a legend of the age, a hero whose exploits will be sung about by bards for centuries. This is a player-focused game—all of the adventures will be built around your characters: the goals they choose to pursue and obstacles tailored specifically to them. The original game world will be custom-tailored to the players’ interests.

About me
👋 Hi! I’m Gary. 🧙♂️ You came here looking for a gamemaster—one who will make sure you have a great time. Give me a try. My #1 priority as a GM is to make sure everyone at the table has fun. 🛠️ I have spent more than 40 years gamemastering, worldbuilding, and roleplaying. I have the experience to deal with every situation, to know what works and what doesn't. 📕 I’m a professionally published fiction author, and my fantasy fiction has earned a handful of accolades. Tabletop roleplaying games have been my real passion, though, ever since I got the Red Box for Christmas when I was 10 years old. In the 40 years since, I’ve run dozens of different game systems for everyone from tweens to senior citizens, for beginners and veteran gamers alike. 🌐 Like many of us, I’ve garnered hundreds of hours of experience running games online since 2020. But running games over the internet wasn’t new to me. I’ve been doing it since the 1990s, when I used Delphi chat rooms. 🪄 When you play in one of my games, you’ll have the freedom to use your imagination. I love saying, “Yes, you can do that.” I never want to get in the way of player creativity. 🌟 I work hard to make sure my players have an experience they can’t get anywhere else. Whether I’m running an offbeat game full of eccentric characters or an intense campaign full of heroics and sacrifice, you can count on me to help you create an original, unique story. ⌨️ If you want a low-bandwidth game or a no-voice game—because of technology limitations, hearing or speech impairment, or just because that’s what you like—I will be happy to set one up for you. ✨ What are you waiting for? Let’s go on an adventure—book a game with me. I can’t wait to create great things together. ✨

Creating your character
We'll be using the remastered Pathfinder 2e rules for this game. If you want to bring something into the game that isn't included in the remaster, that's fine—the rules are backwards compatible. If you don't know the Pathfinder rules, that's fine too. For players joining the game in progress, you can send me your character any time before the session starts. I can import from pathbuilder or enter the character manually. I'm available to discuss your character almost any time, so feel free to message me. If you join the game at the last minute, you're welcome to play a pregen character for a session so you can get your bearings before you decide who you want to play.
Recruiting Now! Free Archetype! Party is level six, and currently consists of a rogue, a fighter, and a barbarian. But play anything you like—I'll balance the game around the party's composition. This game is very narrative-driven, so new characters will need a strong motivation and at least some backstory. I'll be glad to work with you to help you build a character whose personal motivations add to the story and tie the character to the party.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
• You'll need free accounts at both Discord and The Forge (forge-vtt.com). If you need help setting those up, message me. • You'll need some way to participate in voice chat on Discord—a headset mic would be perfect. • We won't be using webcams. • You'll need a desktop or laptop computer to access the game on Foundry. The only software you'll need is whatever web browser you prefer.
What Call Me Gary brings to the table
• We’ll be playing Pathfinder 2e. I have the remastered core books, and if we need another book, I’ll get it. You need only bring your sense of adventure. • I will provide a narrative framework based on your character's goals and weaknesses, so that you will face compelling challenges—no generic prepublished adventures here, and also no aimless open-sandbox wandering. • I have servers for both Discord and Foundry. You'll be given instructions on how to join both when you book. • I create detailed, original encounter maps for action scenes. • Since this game will be set in a unique original world, I’ll be using Obsidian Portal to record that world’s details. You won’t need an Obsidian Portal account yourself, though if you have one (which can be obtained without cost) you can add pages about your character to the pages I create about the world. • I'm always available to answer questions, whether you've already booked or whether you are considering booking. Feel free to message me here on StartPlaying.

How Call Me Gary creates a safe table
Paths of Legends is a long-term campaign. The game's overarching storylines will be built around the player characters—the kind of stories you want, and challenges based on your characters' backgrounds and goals. Your adventures won’t be set in Golarion, Pathfinder’s generic default world, but in an original world that will be built outward as the game develops. As far as nuts-and-bolts: we will be using Discord for voice communication, and Foundry VTT to manage character sheets, make dice rolls, and provide a tabletop. I know many PF2/Foundry players prefer games with tons of visual and audio effects and animation. I don't use many effects or animations for the same reason I don't use webcams: because I want to keep my games accessible for people who don't have top-flight computers or internet connections. PF2/Foundry has a ton of automation right out of the box. I don't use any automation add-on modules on top of that, and I sometimes pull back on the automation built in to the system, because automation can get in the way of GM discretion and ability to tweak things on the fly. Expect a fair amount of theater of the mind in this game, though there will also be encounter maps for combats or in other situations where the game benefits.
