About the adventure
You or a loved one lost your soul to eternal damnation after signing an infernal contract with the devil Asmodeus. To save your lost soul, you must confront Asmodeus at his throne in the Ninth of the Nine Hells. But it is not only your soul at stake. The holy city of Elturel has also descended into the first of the Nine Hells via the machinations of archdevils. Elturel's elite Hellrider guards offer to help you save your lost soul if only you can save their city. Weighed down by mighty chains and surrounded by devils, Elturel is doomed without you, and you are doomed without it. Even if you save Elturel, in the end, you must face Asmodeus himself. A conniving schemer, he will not relinquish your lost soul so easily... Can you survive the horrors of the Nine Hells, and break the chains of Asmodeus? Or are you eternally damned? This campaign combines a shortened version of Descent into Avernus and a shortened version of Chains of Asmodeus into a single campaign of roughly 40 sessions in length (length may vary depending on player choices). Sessions are held every two weeks. Please note we are skipping the Baldur's Gate chapter from Descent into Avernus and some of the Nine Hells that have little to do with the main plot. Players will be able to: • Rise from Level 6 to Level 18 • Fight dangerous monsters and devils • Drive Mad Max-inspired war machines through Hell • Negotiate with anti-heroes, heroes, and villains • Explore the Nine Hells, in all their fiery, icy, swampy horror. • Resist or succumb to temptations that change the campaign ending

About me
Greetings! I'm Justinian, a history and mythology nerd and “forever GM”. I've been fascinated by stories and games since childhood, and I’ve been running Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition campaigns for over six years! I run revised Wizards of the Coast modules (including Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus, Candlekeep Mysteries, Radiant Citadel, Spelljammer, Strixhaven, and Wild beyond the Witchlight) as well as custom Greek mythology, Theros, and Forgotten Realms adventures. All my games are LGBTQ+ and beginner friendly, and I onboard new players individually to get a sense of player preferences and group fit! My greatest joy as a GM is seeing players implement creative ideas and turn them into victories. I've seen players successfully cast suggestion to magically persuade a guardian to defend against other intruders in a tomb, adopt a slaadi tadpole as an (illegal) school pet, and infiltrate an enemy lair by pretending to be safety inspectors. I look forward to many more moments like these!
View Profile →Character creation
Creating your character
Players must create their own Level 6 character using the following rules: • Creation of a unique character backstory • Standard array or point buy (27) stat creation • Fixed hitpoints • Standard background starting gold and starting equipment (as opposed to gold) • Player race and class from most published Wizards of the Coast content (no Homebrew, Magic: The Gathering, Eberron, Dragonlance, Partnered, or Spelljammer content) • 1 uncommon magic item, 1 rare magic item, and 500 gold pieces to start (players who completed long-term campaigns with me previously will start with 2 uncommon magic items, 2 rare magic items, and 1000 gold pieces as a loyalty reward)
Message me your Discord username for an onboarding voice call if you have not played with me before. Please follow the instructions at https://startplaying.games/upcoming-adventures -> Nine Hells -> Prep Materials!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
• Microphone with minimal background noise • A stable Internet connection • A Roll20 account, Discord account, and D&D Beyond account (all are free!) • Beyond20 browser extension • Some preparation (read the prep materials and join the Discord and Roll20 channels, have character ideas for Session 0, be responsive to questions before Session 0, which will be sent via Discord) • One-on-one onboarding voice interview with me (if new to my games) • Message me regarding any lines and veils • Bring a positive attitude! We are journeying into the Hells, but we don't need players from Hell!

How Justinian creates a safe table
Players should submit their lines and veils to me by direct message, and I will create a list of the group's collective lines and veils to avoid any triggering content. Players should note this adventure has some dark themes, including blood, death, devil worship, fire, gore, hostages, kidnapping, mass death, memory erasure, mind alteration, mind control, murder, and violence. If these are likely to disturb you, please select another adventure, or message me to request accommodations. Players must sign onto a Code of Conduct in my Discord server before they begin play. Our group will take a break to discuss safety issues above-table during gameplay if needed to ensure the group feels comfortable before proceeding. Each session will also include a 10-minute break at about the midway point. Players will be encouraged to submit stars and wishes after each session so the GM can emphasize aspects players find appealing and craft gameplay to suit player preferences.
