About the adventure

Long ago a hero of the Deep Gnomes, Durthmeck the Unbreakable, built a facility to help train his kin to defend themselves against a new threat - the Drow. For some time the endeavor prospered but ultimately it was lost and forgotten to the ages. It has been rediscovered, and beckons all to face down the cunning of gnomish engineering in hopes of gaining access to riches beyond measure. Will you accept the challenge?

About me

I have been GMing since 2014, and playing table top RPGs since 2007. I have a passion for the hobby and elected to make that passion profitable while I'm between jobs at the moment. I have an easy-going style, though I do make sure that progress is made, and have experience in a couple of different games. Here's the list of the games I'm most experienced with: D&D 3.5 and 5E, Star Wars Revised edition (this was made by Wizards of the Coast back in the early '00s; I've very nearly finished a conversion of it to 5E) and Call of Cthulhu 7E. I'm looking to expand my horizons and run other games later on, but for now I'll be starting with D&D 5E one-shots. I've also created my own Discord for this very purpose. I do have a couple of rules: 1. I do session 0s. They will occur 1 to 2 days before the first proper session, depending on player availability. I'll field any questions you have there, but feel free to roll up your character prior to the session 0. I prefer to let players do this on their own as it helps them to connect to their character. 2. I generally allow any and every method of rolling stats, but do try to confer with your fellow players on this as some folks are rather particular about that kind of thing. 3. I have a zero tolerance policy for real world racism and sexism, homophobia, and transphobia of any kind. Some in-world racism is unavoidable in most games (for instance, racial issues create conflict in the Forgotten Realms, and most Call of Cthulhu games are set in the 1920's in the real world, which was notoriously unkind to anyone who was not white, straight or male) but that will be used sparingly or, depending on how things go in session 0, not at all. This policy also applies to sexual harassment. Anyone who violates this policy will be immediately and permanently kicked from the Discord server and the game. 4. Webcams are not required. I use one simply to make it feel more like we're all sitting around a table, but don't feel obligated to use one yourself. 5. I make heavy use of Roll20 and ObsidianPortal. Roll20 is the most popular virtual table top on the market currently and I really like its toolset. ObsidianPortal is a website dedicated to organizing campaigns, particularly in regards to characters, items, maps, etc. It's free to sign up for both sites. For one-shots I will only be using Roll20, but when I start running longer games I will use both sites.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character level will depend on the module. You may create them on your own time, or wait until session 0. If you're new to the hobby, the latter is recommended.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Mic will be required but not webcam. I will always use one as I think it makes it feel a bit more like we're all around the table. Obviously a good knowledge of the rules is the foundation for good roleplaying, but do feel free to save up questions for session 0. As far as in-person games go, I highly recommend bringing your own dice. My house is not in great shape (not messy, but it is old and has not had much work done on it over the years) so for in-person games I'll be running at one of two local game shops. They naturally sell dice but I do have a few spare sets that I'm happy to lend. You will most certainly need a character sheet of some kind. A print out and pencil are always excellent, but you could also, for instance, use a phone or tablet and an app or site like D&D Beyond or ObsidianPortal. I know that at least one of the two shops have wi-fi, so it's up to you, ultimately.

What Ryan brings to the table

I will bring spare dice, minis, map tiles and, in the case of Call of Cthulhu, props. I hope to start using props for 5E. I've always wanted to create illustrations for my player's characters but sadly I have no gifts in the visual arts whatsoever. I will, however, paint a mini for you if you decided to buy one for your character.
