Scum and Villainy, Forged in the Dark | Campaign

About the adventure

Do you want to slip in and out of high sec spaceports? Or navigate the relationship and politics between different species? Do you want to fight the galactic empire or run dodgy goods between different star systems? Come and learn the rules of Scum and Villainy. This is a Forged in the Dark/Blades-in-the-Dark-offshoot and is fantastic fun. It places the power and agency firmly in the players hands. I will support new players as I introduce them to the mechanics involved. In Forged in the Dark (FitD), the group decides on the specific themes that influence the gameplay. The story builds from this. It is every bit as epic and structured as published scenarios from other systems but this game puts the players right in the centre of the trouble or politics or shenanigans. Do you belong to the wretched hive of scum and villainy? I bet you’ve got a heart of gold underneath? No? Come and play. Touchstones (but not limited to) include: Star Wars, Firefly, Far from the Light of Heaven, The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, Mass Effect, The Expanse, Project Hail Mary, Killjoys, Murderbot, Cowboy Bebop...

Adventure and encounters and a weekly end of session review of experience leading to continuous growth of characters. Forge a character in this cinematic, TV series like game.

Rick is an exceptional GM! He is passionate about Blades in the Dark, knows the rules and lore well and is near-endlessly creative in adapting the factions and setting in response to character background and player choices. In addition, there are plenty of twists and turns to the narrative that keep the games engaging and exciting session after session. I can honestly say that being a player in the games Rick runs is consistently a highlight of my week. If the opportunity arises, I can wholeheartedly recommend joining one of his games.

I have been playing with Rick for months now and am thoroughly enjoying it. Rick creates new and interesting encounters each week and encourages our creativity and foolishness and guides us through all the hurdles and dastardly rules with great skill. I would definitely recommend him.

Rick was absolutely amazing! I had a group of four players with mixed experience levels with any sort of TTRPG, two of which had no experience whatsoever. Rick created a bespoke adventure that ethralled everyone at the table and gave everyone a chance to shine. I highly recommend hiring him for your next adventure. You will not be disappointed.

A great creator of setting and tone, takes their time to setup a world worth playing in. Is more of a slow burn type of GM, not every session is going to be full of action. However, if you are into that kind of pace, I highly recommend playing with him!

I've played with Rick in Blades in the Dark for a few months now and he has a very fun table. Memorable sessions filled with players who Rick encourages and supports. Its not just at the table though he has an active discord where we stay in touch throughout the week. There are in between session write ups that keep the story fresh and on our minds. I enjoy Rick and our game quite a lot. You should give him a try.

Rick is very accessible and collaborates well for any concern you have with your game or game session. He is an exemplary teacher, the ideal person for someone who is totally new to a game or intends to run a game themselves.

Additional details

How to prepare

Players will need a roll20 account and have clicked the link to ensure that they have joined the group. Also a discord account and again the link clicked (in notes on here and will be messaged to player). There are also some guidelines for player/character naming in discord and on roll20 which makes for a more cohesive and smooth game for GM and co-players alike. I will message you once you have joined and stay in communication with you up to your first play session. We have a community server where you will see game linked resources and ideas.

What I provide

Years of experience as a GM - meaning that characters are brought to life through the voices I use (to different degrees of success but guaranteed to bring a smile), and vocabulary that different NPCs use (unusual curse words - 'you rattle mi ‘ed' and 'pitts swittle'). Official published materials both hardback book in my hands and the resources on roll20. A community Discord Server with a specific game channel that captures the key elements of each session ensuring narrative continuity. The people in this server are great and we have a really good vibe.

Gameplay details

We'll start with a little bit of admin, then do character creation and ship selection before jumping into the strating scenario. We will go over safety tools in session 0. I have limited the content warninng list due to the higher fantasy setting so Lines and Veils will be of a higher importance in this session. Xs can be messaged privately or straight into chat. Specific use will be discussed in session 0.

How will character creation work

Before an actual play session, I will meet with you and take you through the character sheet so that you understand each part and can make informed choices. Character creation is an active process. As well as choosing from a list of playbooks that fit your style of character. You will choose starting abilities and skills. An important part will be about establishing who you are and what your relationship is to the other crew members and wider sector/galaxy. We will do this by asking and answering questions. If we dont know an answer - that is okay - we will play to find out the answer.
