About the adventure

A long awaited play test of the narrative focused Indie RPG Kaizoku! Eventually an official setting may accompany the game, but for this play test, we'll be using the world of Eiichiro Oda's ONE PIECE as our starting point. So gather up your dreams, plot a course, and prepare to make friends along the way!

About me

ALLY Lifelong gamer Proud author of Kaizoku! RPG The things that make games memorable aren't the dice rolls, but the stories behind them. Sure, if we begin with a game of tactics, there's a chance a great story will develop. But if we begin with an interesting and authentic story, we can bestow even the simplest decisions with immense gravity, or discover unexpected charm. I started running TTRPGs in the 80's, beginning with that bright red fantasy box set and eventually playing every game and genre I could get my hands on. In the 90's, I started Storytelling for LARPs-- among the first (Moustique Noir) and largest (ISTG) in California. Eventually I moved to Las Vegas and started running games for new friends every day, as a table games dealer, instructor, and supervisor. In 2021, I released the first playable draft of my own game called Kaizoku! RPG, a rules light cartoon pirate game. In the decades that games have been a focal point in my life, I've learned that games of all types can be an art, but also a skill that can be improved with time, effort, and play. It seems to me now that the time and effort are already invested-- so it must be time to play!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation is described in the playable alpha rules on the discord. Print up a sheet if you'd like, but don't write anything on it quite yet. Maybe bring an idea or two. We'll build our characters together, using flashbacks as necessary to flesh out backgrounds as we go.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

If you haven't read the rules of Kaizoku!, I think you should probably do that? I'll read them again too. Audio is required, video is preferred. There is no software to install. Foundry VTT runs in your browser.

What Jared Null brings to the table

Play testers will be mentioned in subsequent versions of the game, so make sure you give me your favorite alias before you sign off!

Safety

How Jared Null creates a safe table

To facilitate online play of a pen-and-paper game, we'll be using Foundry Virtual Tabletop, hosted by The Forge, and using a Livekit A/V server. There is no software to download. During games, audio will be required, video is preferred. If you don't want to appear on video with your own meat face, consider Animaze on Steam, a bit of freeware which will allow you to create a virtual avatar of your liking. But I think your meat face is fine the way it is. Character creation and worldbuilding will happen during our first session. We'll also take that opportunity to talk about the expectations we have for the game, and to discuss safety tools. As a GM I use "Lines and Veils" and "The X Card" equivalents, and we'll talk about those at the beginning of our session. In the mean time, if you have any specific concerns or triggers you'd like to exclude from our shared fiction, you can mention them to me in a private message, and I will make every effort to accommodate the exclusion of those triggers from our game-- no explanation is necessary. While the fictional world we'll play in is sometimes quite barbaric, anticipate zero tolerance for depictions of sexual assault, as well as any positive framing of racism, misogyny, or transphobia.
