About the adventure

It is a time of Galactic Turmoil as the Evil Galactic Empire tightens its grip on the outlying systems of the Outer Rim. Sporadic acts of sedition cause Imperial Forces to crack down brutally on all dissent. Meanwhile, the Imperial Survey Service expands its probes into Unknown Space, and are requisitioning all available forced labor to excavate promising dig sites. Criminals from all over the Galaxy are being sentenced to decades of Hard Labor, loaded on Prisoner Transports, and launched into deep space to assist the excavations run by the ISS. Aboard the Imperial Prison Ship Embryss, you and your fellow Renegades are being shipped off to the Unknown Regions. What the Empire does not know is that you and your compatriots are a Rebel Cell infiltrating this site, hoping to discover what the Imperials are looking for out there and perhaps take it for yourselves . . . [This game is being run using the Star Wars RPG System first published by Fantasy Flight and continued by Edge Studios. The Game is based on Edge of the Empire Setting, but Characters can be built using Careers from Age of Rebellion and Force and Destiny with the Game Master's Permission. Experience with the system is not required - the Game Master is happy to teach as we go along. All you need to do is bring your courage, your love for adventure, and a little bit of luck - the Game Master will bring the rest.]

About me

Hail and Well Met! I am Overlord Jim (It's an old internet handle I happen to like, just go with it) and I have been running and playing TTRPGs for over 20 years now. I have always wanted to try my hand at Professional Game Mastery, and the age of Covid-19 is as good a time as any to get into it. My nerd credentials start with climbing every castle tower within driving distance of our home in Great Britain when I lived there as a child. My love of that era has lead me to become a serious medievalist scholar with a particular emphasis on the Early Medieval Era (better known as the Viking Age), and I have more than a passing familiarity with the Crusading Era and the Hundred Years War as well. My bookshelves are packed with all the classics of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Genres, and most of them are well loved with many creases in the spines. I got into theater as a teenager and minored in it in college, but my B.A. is in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations, and I have most of a Master's in International Studies that I just couldn't afford to complete. Someday I will go back for a M.A. in Medieval History, but for now, I content myself with reading it constantly to write better roleplaying books in historical settings. I am a Veteran of the Sub/Dub Wars (Dub Forever!), I believe one can like both Star Wars and Star Trek (though the latter is clearly superior), and my definition of a good night out always involves character sheets, dice, and stacks of roleplaying books. I have been a Storyteller as long as I can remember in my real life, I've been an aspiring novelist since my teens, and when I discovered these games, I was instantly hooked. I'm forever enamored of the freedom this medium offers. You have complete freedom of direction - you could go anywhere you can imagine and do anything the system can support (and often, quite a bit it was never meant to do but the GM makes it work!), which is something no other medium of entertainment can deliver, and you join in this endeavor with your friends as collaborators, and the story you tell together is always bigger than the sum of its parts. Every table and every troupe offers a unique experience, and I want nothing more than to come craft an epic story together with you. And I do mean EPIC. I love putting my PCs in the middle of the most exciting chapters in the history of their world, and handing them the power to change events for the better - or worse, if they so choose - just to see what they do with it. My favorite system - Exalted - is perfectly suited to this style of play, where I cast players in the roles of reborn Demigods out to save the world - or destroy it. What legends will they tell of your deeds? Come join my table and find out. A few entries from my Roleplaying Resume: - 20+ Years Experience behind the Screen - Specialized in Non-D&D Options [Exalted, Scion, Classic World of Darkness, Star Wars RPG (FFG Version), and more!] - Always willing to try a new system or setting - 10+ Years Experience as a Presenter on the Art of Game Mastery (https://www.facebook.com/ArtofGameMastery) - Coming to a Convention near you! (When conventions come back, that is . . .) - 5+ Years experience running Convention Games - Published Freelance Writer (High Level Games' Snowhaven Setting, Storyteller's Vault, Storypath Nexus) I have decided that all future scenarios I write will be with an eye towards their eventual publication, so you won't just be participating in an awesome online experience - you'll be playtesting new gaming materials too! About my Pricing Structure: I am a Plotter GM, not a Pantser GM, to borrow an analogy from writing - while every GM gets good at Improvisational GMing by necessity, it isn't my first choice and I prefer to come to the table with most of the prep work done long in advance. Therefore, my pricing reflects not only the time at the table, but also the time building the scenario, statting out the NPCs, planning the combat encounters - if you have ever run a TTRPG, you know it is at the very least a demanding Part Time Job if not a Full Time Occupation in and of itself! So while I do understand everyone in our hobby is perpetually broke (Roleplaying Books are an expensive addiction and Kickstarter is a hell of a drug), I also need to price in my prep time too. Besides, I plan to use any revenue I make from my endeavors here to pay for the art to decorate the books I'm writing - so you aren't just paying for an incredible STing experience - you're also helping to develop new RPG material and funding its development costs. You are contributing to the future of your hobby, which now more than ever is driven by the independent creatives like me who are invested in expanding it. So know that my time factors into the cost of the seat, and that your ticket to the game is going to support the hobby we both love. I look forward to seeing you at my next event!

Character creation

Creating your character

The Players and GM will work together to create the Characters using the rules in Edge of the Empire (Though Careers from Age of Rebellion and Force and Destiny will be available) during Session 0. The GM has access to just about every book in the line, many options will be available. All PCs should have an ongoing source of Obligation to an individual or organization that would be considered 'shady' at the very least. This will be discussed at Session 0. Also, every PC will also have had a run-in with Imperial Authorities that resulted in them being captured, tried, and sentenced to hard labor, as this is how you came to be on the Prisoner Transport at the beginning of the game. For those wishing to be Force Sensitive, an understanding of how you survived the Jedi Purge during Order 66 (just 14 years ago) is also required. Force Sensitive Careers and Specializations are allowed, but no Lightsaber Skill Ranks, Forms, or Kyber Crystals will be available at start, as such things must be quested for in Game.

The current party

This game will be every Friday Night starting 7:00 PM Eastern. The base rules for this adventure can be found in Edge of the Empire, but rules from Age of Rebellion and Force and Destiny will be used as appropriate, and Careers from all sourcebooks will be considered. Force Sensitive Characters are allowed, with the understanding that any Force Sensitive over the age of 16 will have to have avoided the events of Order 66. In the backstories of each character, an Obligation to some other individual or organization will be required. PCs will begin heavily indebted, with opportunities to clear that Obligation arising during play. Force Sensitive Characters will also acquire a Morality Track and choose Virtues and Flaws appropriately. PCs backstories also have to contain an incident in which the PC ran afoul of Imperial Law, was arrested, tried, and convicted of the offense (whether or not you were actually guilty of it is immaterial) and sentenced to several years hard labor, and this is how you ended up on the Prison Transport Embryss at the beginning of the story . . .

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should message the Game Master either here or via Discord (renaissnceman) to get a Pre-Game Survey. Please fill this out and return it prior to Session 0 This game is being run over the Internet, so some form of Microphone/Speaker setup to send and receive voice communication is necessary. I love it when my players are willing to be 'On Camera' with me, as I like seeing my player's smiling faces. I am looking into Virtual Table Tops to run this specifically, and one called Questline appears promising and may have the ability to roll the unique dice necessary for this game. This would save players having to purchase the unique dice that this game uses, though there are conversion charts available for standard D6s, D8s, and D12s should players wish to roll their own dice. If players happen to possess a copy of Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, or Force and Destiny, reading the chapters on the system and rules is helpful. If not, the GM will teach as we go along, and we will practice the system together.

What Overlord Jim brings to the table

I will bring the love of Star Wars that I have had for my whole life, and half a lifetime of experience behind the Screen as a Game Master. I have an especial love for the Jedi Knights and their Sith Opposites, and am perfectly willing to set players on the path to becoming Jedi themselves, as it is one many of my own characters have started down as well. I have a deep and abiding love of this setting, and I believe the Fantasy Flight System is one of the best systems to use to experience it, and I have played it almost as long as it has been in print. I look forward to taking your characters on a wild adventure through the Outer Rim territories, and hopefully you'll do a little good out there while having a blast fighting the Empire.

Safety

How Overlord Jim creates a safe table

Despite that rather extensive list of content warnings, it is my intent to give this game a lighter tone, more consistent with a PG to PG-13 experience, akin to past and current Star Wars TV shows. Inspirations for this adventure include Solo, Rogue One, and the Clone Wars & Rebels TV Shows, to give you some idea. The PCs will begin as prisoners of the Empire, but will likely shortly free themselves and escape into a Galaxy where the Empire is at its height. The Battle of Yavin is years away and Renegades like yourselves must look out for your own, and stand up for those who cannot stand for themselves. I use Pre-Game Surveys to get to know my players and to gather Lines and Veils, which will be discussed as a Group during Session 0. I plan Breaks during game, I allow an Open Door, and please, use the X, N, and O cards. and Remind me to do Stars and Wishes.
