About the adventure

"You hear the raven’s eerie cry, On a fencepost withered doth it lie, Its beak deep within a carcass dead, A bloodied parchment beneath its head, With a screech and flutter it bids you farewell, Leaving behind a tale of hell." You take up the parchment and find a tattered, blood-stained journal page that reads... Beneath a twisted Beech tree at the water’s edge, I watch a smoky white mist seep across the lake before me. The forest bleeds away to nothingness with each passing moment. The water perfectly still. No ripples, no reflections, a single dark pane of glass… dwindling… dwindling… It looks much as my mind feels as of late. continue reading the setting intro here ----> <http://nickmacari.com/beyond-the-grey-forest/> ### Wars, pestilence, economic collapse, a cloud of despair hangs in the air of the gothic horror infused custom campaign setting. Influenced by Ravenloft/Curse of Strahd. This campaign will start off at level 1 in a typical fantasy setting under the pressures as described above. You'll quickly find yourselves stuck in a true gothic horror nightmare scenario. My goal for this campaign is to really weave a horrific playable horror story... something that will leave an impression and hopefully make some hearts race as we play. Survival Horror. Dread. Real fear. Cold sweaty palms... and then that feeling of euphoria when you make it through to the other side. Shooting to deliver all that in spades. Don't expect a cheap thrills kind of experience. Throwing in gore, in and out of combat, is the easy part. My horror doesn't turn on shock--it turns on really putting you in the setting, building and weaving an elaborate story around you.

Recruiting notes

• No session 0, we go right into campaign session 1. I always run my first session with new players, tip based. If you decide not to continue, I hope you tip something for my time in creating the campaign and running the session. If you really hated it and don't want to drop a dime, no harm no foul, thanks for playing. I ONLY ASK, please do not take advantage. Only begin the campaign if you're fine with paying the full rate going forward. With StartPlaying, I don't think there's a way to vary the first session fee, so I think it has to charge the full amount. Post game, new players can tell me how much they want to pay for the first session and I'll refund the difference, if there is a difference (once all the money clears from Startplaying). I'm here for long term players having a blast, not snatching a bunch of noob wallets. • BI-weekly campaign played every other Saturday. • 30 minute mid-game break included in 5.5 hour session. • Level 1 start. Committed through 2024. • Custom horror setting inspired by Ravenloft/Curse of Strahd tone and... • Evil dead, Silent Hill, Alien, Jacob's Ladder, 1408, Lord of Illusions, if you like any of these, you'll probably dig this campaign. • Immersive story structure driven campaign. • Please bring a love of horror. A passion to facilitate a fun table. Dedication to the campaign.

How to prepare

Mic required, video up to you. As we just covered, preference to creating characters ahead of time. Beyond that whatever you want to bring to the table is up to you. Personally, I don't like to run ALL the elements online through the VTT--I like to have papers, with notes, do real math, roll real dice... but you do you.

What I provide

I'll bring the adventure, you bring your character and a positive attitude :) I'll have resources available to share via Roll20, discord, or email.

Gameplay details

CONTENT WARNING: * We're playing a HORROR campaign. * Nothing is off the table. * Evil Dead, Hellraiser, the horror genre is known for moving into and through rough territory. This isn't going to be DARK SHADOWS or WHAT WE DO IN SHADOWS. That said, my intent isn't to be a dick or mean. I want the experience to be enjoyable for everyone.

How will character creation work

Level 1. Create before game. I'm open offline via discord or email. Standard official rules for roll-up. Let me know what you're thinking prior to creation if you want any help with backgrounds. ALSO, if you're familiar with Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft and anything in there stands out as something you'd like to add to your character, please make me aware of that. Lastly, probably a good idea to make more than one character, so you have someone as backup, and don't experience downtime if your buddies let you die. (Unless you prefer to temporarily play an NPC).
