About the adventure

Ever notice how when something spooky happens, it's never just once? Well, there's a good reason for it. The mechanics are still a little fuzzy, but something shows up and feeds on the parts of our brain that are scared to look under the bed. We're not sure how it happens exactly, but pretty soon that little nagging fear or shadowy creature in the corner.. Well, its suddenly a heck of a lot more real. That's where we come in. We handle the mess of emotions, the fears, memories, and hopes. Its all just baggage that everyone drags along with them whether they know it or not. We catch the things that spring from folk's mind and keep the world safe from 'em. Sometimes we can convince them to leave, go somewhere they're less likely to cause a stir. Get them far enough away from their source for long enough and they usually dissipate pretty quick. Some of them though are more tricky. They'll hide, lie, and outright try their all to outsmart you. And, well, others choose the hard way. Violence is always an option, but that usually brings damage and some bloodshed along with it. A good day is one where we can clear a situation without creating another one on the way. It's a thankless job, but someone has to keep the world safe from the monsters we carry with us.

About me

Former fire-breather turned therapeutic GM. Cool, now that I've got your attention. I'm Xan, if the Therapeutic GMing is what got your eye the check out my psychology today listing at the bottom! My numbers and accomplishments are cool, so I'll list them below. Here's who I am though. I'm a life-long storyteller and performer. The love the smell of honey suckles and the sound of a cat's purr. I'll give you a run for your money with a pun contest *any* day of the week, and I live by the motto "Manic enthusiasm is still enthusiasm". Games have brought me joy, relief, and catharsis over the years and I can say without hesitation that they, and the friends I've made through them, have been a huge positive impact on my life. So I'm here to pay that joy back and be the background tapestry for your happy memories and kickass stories. "Rule of Cool" always par for the course and expect me to be just as invested in your characters as you are. I love to flesh a game out through how your character sees the world, "you walk into the market and an unexpected scent brings you back home for a split second. What is it?". I prioritize safety and making sure that I'm making my game suited to the players, not the other way around. Feel free to reach out to me if you'd like to talk about booking a private game or consultation about your own game. I'd love to help you make your own time as a GM the most rewarding it can be. I'm also available if you are looking for guests or experts in the topics at the intersection of mental health and TTRPGs. And, the numbers! 20+ Featured Speaking events (PAX, Save Against Fear, Therapeutic and Applied Gaming Growth Summit) 9 Years professional GM 1 published adventure in Rock and Roll 5e (zine) 50+ homebrew materials for the larger games 4 Hacks written 1 original game developed 1 Full length game in development 33 years of being a total badass Therapeutic Skill building‽‽ With games (or just with a cool coach)‽‽ Yup! Full disclosure though, listings on Startplaying *are not* therapeutic sessions. Those require a different approach, intent, and structure. Character creation

Creating your character

I'll share the helpful documents and provide the roll20 where we'll keep the actual sheets. I'm always excited to help with character creation, broad themes, crunchy mechanics, potential homebrew; and everything in-between. On our server, we'll share ideas together and create our crew. If after the 1st or 2nd session your character isn't feeling the way you thought they would, or your realize there is something else you'd rather explore, then you are welcome to tweak your character. If you want to address the changes, big or small, in fiction you always can or we can just ret-con.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need access to roll20, steady internet, and a working microphone. No need for anything professional, inbuilt is fine. Video is encouraged but not required.

What Xan!!! brings to the table

I'll bring the discord server, the roll20 page, the pdfs, and the recaps between each session.

How Xan!!! creates a safe table

An an addition to the stuff below, there is a lot that can go in the CW setting. We'll be dealing with the spooky things that come from nightmares or the latest cryptid threatening mass hysteria. But, before any plot hooks are determined we'll use safety tools to make sure that everyone has a shared understanding of what types of nightmares we might deal with, and which we will be ignoring entirely. -- Before we begin, we'll do a group lines/inventory and toss any ideas out for potential threads for characters. Before the first session I'm available to help out with character questions, or clarifications on themes and safety tools. This'll be on discord where we'll have a space for us to share thoughts throughout the process. When we meet for the session of play, I'll go into more detail about the safety tools, do a little intro for everyone's character, and establish existing connections before we set the group on their opening purpose. After the first and future sessions, we'll create a space for Stars/Wishes and time to discuss bleed that may have happened.
