About the adventure
Winter is here, and it's here to stay. ❄️ The cold-hearted Frostmaiden likes it that way. 💙 So roll the dice. 🎲 Survive the ice. 🧊 Or the folks of the north will never see day. 🥶 Survival for the hardy folks of the north was always a struggle, but with a winter that has now lasted over two years with no end in sight, they might not be making it through this one. The rest of the world is cut off behind the Frostmaiden's merciless blizzards, and her servants demand sacrifices. The tundra may feel bleak and empty, but ancient evils lurk beneath the ice, dangerous opportunists seek power at any cost, and everyone has their secrets. They might just kill you... if the cold doesn't get you first. While the world around you is set in ice, the path you carve is not. Choose your battles and shape your future. Will you be one of the heroes the north desperately needs, or will you too succumb to the rime? This is a 5e campaign for 3-6 adventurers and will span from level 1 to 12. The campaign will use tactical maps for most combats. This is a tale of horror, hope, and hard choices in an open-ended adventure of resilient heroes!

(he/him) Salutations! My name is Joshua, and I facilitate cooperative storytelling experiences. I have been GMing for 27 years with nearly 10,000 hours at the table behind the GM screen. Home games, con games, Short games, and long games. Simple, mysterious, Silly, or serious; I've run them. I believe that RPGs should be a safe playground where players can explore identities and ideas while feeling welcome and empowered. I design and facilitate my campaigns to center the player characters, weaving them into the world and building it up around them. My favorite genre is fractured fairy tales and fresh retellings of classic stories.

Creating your character
We will discuss character ideas and the party's backstory during Session 0. During Session 0, you will be offered some Character Secrets to choose from (or create your own). Please send your character sheet to me at least 24 hours before the Session 1 for approval. I am available to talk through character creation ahead of time, and can provide a pre-generated character upon request. Player characters are 1st level with starting equipment plus a free set of cold weather clothing. Use the Standard Array or 27 Point Buy for ability scores. Any officially published material is available for use, and homebrew and customization will be allowed, subject to review.
Heavy focus on character RP and drama. Party Composition (Level 6): Druid, Artificer-Rogue, Paladin-Fighter, Rogue, Warlock Current status: Hunting a dragon and resolving a goliath feud!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
A microphone is required to participate. A webcam is encouraged, but not necessary. I will have my camera on, and I'd love to see you too! We will be using Discord and Roll20 to play, so you will need (free) accounts for both of them. You might want to download the Discord client as well. Dice and character sheets will be handled within Roll20.
What Joshua brings to the table
As GM, I will provide the adventure itself, including maps and tokens. I will provide access to sourcebooks through D&D Beyond. I can provide pre-generated characters on request. Dice rolling may be handled through Roll20, through D&D Beyond (with the Beyond20 browser extension), or with physical dice.

How Joshua creates a safe table
Rime of the Frostmaiden is a dark fantasy story full of cruel villains, innocent people in bad situations, and the merciless cold. It includes some especially dark elements including human sacrifice and starvation. It is also a story of hope, and standing up to change the seemingly impossible. This game will contain elements of violence and peril comparable to a PG-13 rated film. Please let me know if there are additional things I need to be aware of to maintain your comfort and safety. Racism, sexism, transphobia, ableism, and all other discrimination will not be tolerated.
