Beyond the Mountains of Madness - An Epic Antarctic Campaign for Call of Cthulhu
Call of Cthulhu | Campaign
About the adventure
"Little by little they rose grimly into the western sky; allowing us to to witness various bare, bleak and blackened summits . . . in the reddish Antarctic light against the provocative background of iridescent ice-dust clouds. In the whole spectacle there was a persistent, pervasive hint of stupendous secrecy and potential revelation. . . . I could not help feeling that they were evil things—mountains of madness whose farther slopes looked out over some accursed ultimate abyss." - H.P. Lovecraft The scientific world was amazed by reports from the 1931 Miskatonic University expedition into uncharted Antarctica. The entire world was shocked by the tragedy which followed. Now the new and even larger Starkweather-Moore expedition will brave the mysteries of the icy continent. How credible were earlier reports of fossilized remains of ancient life forms predating all known terrestrial life? Will your expedition return in glory or tragedy? Beyond the Mountains of Madness is a direct sequel to Lovecraft's famous novella "At The Mountains of Madness", in which an expedition from the Miskatonic University in Arkham discovers proof of an ancient, alien civilization, thus giving you the opportunity to join the Starkweather-Moore Expedition and finish what the first one started—and to uncover the truth of what truly happened to those who went before you. Murder, sabotage, perilous sea journeys, daring polar exploration by sled and plane, lost civilizations, giant albino penguins, alien technology, glory, death and madness await! So don't hesitate. How to prepare
We will be playing mostly on Roll20, where character sheets, a dice roll function and Video-Chat will be provided. All you need is a (free) Roll20 account and a microphone. A webcam is not a must strongly encouraged! We may use Discord as a secondary platform for communication between sessions and also in case there are technical issues with Roll20, since Discord seems to be the most popular alternate platform.
What I provide
I will provide the campaign, maps, handouts, intriguing NPCs, atmosphere and music, solid knowledge of all relevant rules, tokens and battlemaps in the rare event they may be needed, and reliable good cheer.
Gameplay details
This campaign is equally suited for experienced Call of Cthulhu players as it is for beginners. If you are not familiar with the rules, I will explain everything when needed. While there will be combat and action galore, the focus will be on atmosphere, exploration, investigation and roleplaying this dramatic expedition into the terrifying, icy southern wastes and the ancient mysteries awaiting there. As a game of Cosmic Horror set in the 1930s this game will touch on sensitive matters. We are here to have fun, so I will *not* fully play out the prejudices of the times! This game is safe and open to women, people of color, members of the LBGTQ+ community and disabled people! But unless a player lets me know they wish to skip these topics entirely, I may make allusions to those prejudices as a source of conflict and verisimilitude. I take the wellbeing of everyone at my (virtual) table very seriously. There will be a session zero (free) in which we will go over potential triggers and safety instruments. I will update the players at the start of sessions about potential upcoming triggers as the campaign progresses. At the end of each session I will try to make time for a quick debriefing and also be available directly after the session (and generally between sessions) for feedback and discussion. If at any time a player feels uncomfortable, there will be the option for a break, a discussion or a simple moment of feedback to me, so the trigger or source of conflict can be resolved. I will not tolerate any sexism, racism, ableism, ageism, homo- or transphobia or any other toxic behavior.

How will character creation work
You can create your own characters according to the rules of Call of Cthulhu 7th edition, we can create them together during session zero, or I can provide pre-made characters, the choice will be yours. If characters die during the course of the campaign or you just feel uncomfortable with a character for any reason, you can get a new character and transfer whatever XP/progress you have made to it.
