Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden ā» New Player Friendly Campaign
About the adventure
šæ Campaign š² D&D Beyond Character Creation š£ Voice Acting ā Beginner and LGBTQ+š³āš Friendly A bitter winter shrouds the region of Icewind Dale, apparently unending. As a group of adventurers, you must travel into the frigid wastes to determine the cause and, if possible, bring back the banished sun... An adventure that takes characters from level 1 up to at least level 12, Rime of the Frostmaiden: Icewind Dale is ideal for folks who are new to D&D or who have plenty of experience. It's a diverse adventure, with plenty of balance between exploration, combat and roleplay.

About me
Hi, I'm Steve! I've been DMing Dungeons and Dragons, both 4th and 5th edition, for over ten years, and in that time I've worked with new folks and long-time players alike. I run an inclusive game - all are welcome to take part in the exciting and vibrant stories that we build together. I've run several campaigns to their conclusion, and am just as much at home running pre-published campaigns as I am designing my own. The aim is always to have fun, and I facilitate that through encouraging players to take ownership of their story, and by being vigilant over conduct so that everyone is comfortable. I am available at all sorts of times, currently. If you see a game that isn't at a good time for you, please ask!

Voices
In being a player in Steve's games, I always felt as though he empowered my decisions and those of the group. He also allowed us to go off in directions that allowed for our own creativity. He did not railroad, and our own good or bad decisions would always see fruit later in the campaign. I only have praise for him.
Played within a homebrew world in D&D5e. Steve assisted in providing the right amount of detail to get all the players going but leaving much for us to discover as we played. Excellent set pieces, boss fights and investigation moments throughout. He was even kind enough to let me re-roll a character early into the campaign as I realised I would prefer to play a different class entirely; crafting a introduction of that new character in a memorable way as well.
Steve is a magnificent storyteller, able to fluidly adapt to the pace and tone that we want as players, with the emotional intelligence and sensitivity to understand what that is. He knows the rules backwards and forwards, but will always place our ability to author our own epic adventure as paramount! If you chose Steve as your DM, you are in safe hands, but do not expect his adventures to be without drama, peril and emotional highs and lows. How do you sum up a good DM? Once he sent us into fits of terror using only a door. Once we escaped a labyrinth inside an erupting volcano. Once we parachuted from one giant monster onto the back of another giant monster (it did not go well). Regardless of your experience or preference you are in for a treat and, frankly, I envy you.
I have been playing with Steve for years, and can thoroughly recommend him as a GM/DM. The games he runs are always lots of fun and really dramatic, with great storytelling and world-building. He welcomes player creativity and gives every player time and room to shine, whether that is through detailed roleplay or working out the best actions to take in combat. Steve does brilliant voices for NPCs, but also runs a game where players don't have to 'act' their social interactions if they don't feel like it. He has a thorough knowledge of the rules and is great with both beginners and experienced players (I was a beginner when we first started playing together, but most of the group were not, and we were all very happy with the game). In addition, Steve runs a safe and inclusive game, where I have always felt able to ask questions, experiment with different RP styles, and where any differences of opinion at the table are discussed with an open mind. I would thoroughly welcome Steve as a GM/DM - you won't be disappointed!
Steve set out a lush world brimming with characters, peril and quests for us to explore in. Some of the greatest TTRPG stories I have come from Steve's games as he allows freeform, party-driven adventuring with just the right number of hooks to guide you in the narrative. Thoroughly recommended.
Character creation
Creating your character
During Session 0, we can create characters. I'm also happy for you to create a character in a D&D Campaign I will provide, although I will need to discuss ideas and options with you to make sure that what you have synergises with other players. Rime of the Frostmaiden uses Secrets, an extra character features which is best discussed during Session 0. I prefer Standard Array to rolled stats, although if a player really wants to use rolled stats I am happy for them to roll the stats on Roll20 during Session 0.
Games will be weekly or fortnightly, depending on group preference - weekly is preferable. Please ask if you have any questions! Like all my games, this is new-player friendly, but if you are more experienced, it's ideal for you too! Sessions will include a short break in the middle, and we will begin with Session Zero for character creation as well as discussions about rules and lines, but if you have character prepared and would like to use that, please feel free. The time is flexible - if you are looking at this and are in the US timezone, just message. I'm available throughout the night UK time and can be flexible for you. Please ask if you have any questions!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
I use a webcam and a mic, but webcam is optional for players. If you're new to the game, I'm happy to slowly introduce you to the game through Session 0 and the first couple of play sessions, but some reading of the rules is also useful. Since we're on a virtual tabletop, you can either roll digital dice (on D&D Beyond or on Roll20) or your own physical dice.
What Steve Cook brings to the table
I will provide some visuals on Roll20, and hopefully will bring an exciting collaborative story that we can all tell together!

How Steve Cook creates a safe table
Players can expect an experience that blends roleplay and combat. I like to encourage inventive combat through roleplay - what does it look like when you do X, or what does Y spell going off sound like, and so on. I enjoy roleplay and seek to encourage it wherever possible - I will encourage you to speak in-character, to help conversations flow, but of course during combat there will always be some meta-discussion over tactics etc. The campaign deals with medieval-style combat, fantasy depictions of weapons and actions of violence, creatures with evil agendas and theme-appropriate violence, disease, economic hardship, and supernatural creatures. This is all presented appropriately for a PG-13 audience.
