About the adventure

A campaign of spies, heists, secret organizations hidden plots, high lifestyles streetwise swashbucklers and spellslingers. The Shining Pillar Hand has been through it all. Starting out with no information and no support they have begun to unravel a plot to distabilize the kingdoms and land, to soften it for invasion. Their path has spanned the lands, through kingdoms of mortals, dwarves, and even the reclusive elves, drawing each folk in to the web of events. After months of work they have found the heir to the crown of Amyrs, and now work to take out the dark knighthood that tried to kill her, so that they can put her safely on the throne and stabilize the kingdom...the last kingdom truly free of the Cerulen Empire's control. After that the hand has a noble house to crush, false gods to kill, and an invasion to thwart. There are only 8 of them, but they have secrecy on their side! Background The land of Maethalas is run by the guilds. Even the crowns of kingdoms bow to the might of trade and knowledge represented by them. For hundreds of years the guilds have gathered and trained those of their arts, and the kingdoms have been enriched by it. Yet it is not chance which keeps the order and peace. Hidden in the network of contracts and negotiations arose an organization which sought to balance the power of greed, to check the power of those with coin, and to keep trade and policy at an equilibrium. The organization is known, in whispers, as the League of Many Hands. The League was once noble, but has been corrupted from within by the spies of a distant empire, bent on conquest. With great powers at their command they have created a false temple of gods, taken control of the League, and in doing so have softened the lands for invasion. Few know what is to come, adn even fewer are in a position to do so. Among them are the members of the Broken Pillar Hand, a group of agents led by a woman with a personal stake in the truth. You play as an agent of the mysterious League of Many Hands, cut adrift from chain-of-command, with enemies all around...some obvious and others unknown. Heists, personnel retrieval, item procurement, political machinations, money rackets, and intrigue-laden interactions are all a part of membership! Sneak, charm, bluff, con, manipulate, and sneak attack your way to success in this thief-centric campaign! Special Discounts: POC, Fems, ESL folks and LGBT Inquire, please!

About me

Imagine The air is cold, stale, and dry. You entered to half-buried hill of old stones following clues scrounged from the lair of cultists, paired with research the wizard spent weeks on...weeks of boredom in the sleepy town. Now, you finally get to stretch your limbs and do what you do best! Ahead of your group the darkness billows like a gauzy curtain. Rock dust grits beneath your boots as the party creeps into a broken chamber. The small sounds you make echo back to you seconds later, distorted, and the ceiling is lost above you in shadow. You can feel the crushing weight of stone above. The fighter carries a torch which gutters in a sudden wind. Sounds creep from the surrounding dark; the dry rasp of scales on stone. The sorcerer's eyes go white as it watches from above through the eyes if it's familiar. The sound of the rogue's footsteps fade as they slip away from the torch's light, knowing that an attack is imminent. Inhuman throats hiss all around the party, whispering coughs punctuating the roiling darkness. At the edges of the torch light the gloom takes shape. Scaled creatures in filthy robes hiss as they charge into the circle of the party's light...What do *you* do?! Decades of Passion and Experience are your Game Engine Play campaigns that are a combination of player-generated and GM-inspired. Be immersed in rich description, action, problem-solving, and meaningful choice! Enjoy tense combat in a combination of grid tactics and narrative description. Dive into sandbox-style play, build your character’s name, resources, and power while unraveling mysteries and secrets. Then use those secrets to alter the direction of the world story, impacting hundreds or thousands with your decisions. Interact with new game mechanics, magic items, and creatures. Personalize your character and tie their abilities to the history of the world. Enjoy tailored gameplay based on character background, abilities, and player playstyle. Delve into grounded and human settings, with events happening beyond your character's actions, and NPCs who have agendas of their own. Experience detailed, evocative worlds, and explore them with a fun table of players and flexible GM who has something to offer every playstyle! Different Playstyles I run several tables and each table has a different game style. New players are absolutely welcome! I enjoy bringing new players in. It may actually be one of my favorite things. New players always bring a fresh perspective, a curiosity about the game, a willingness to flow with others, fresh creativity, and bravery when it comes to trying new things. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons are my best tables for new players. Some of my tables are more challenging than others, some campaigns or groups leaning more toward grittyness, hardcore gameplay, and deep detail. Regardless, the groups that form around my game tables are all gracious and patient...because this is what we feel it takes to make a great game! Old-School, Narrative, and Homebrew I combine elements from many editions of the game, alter rules for each table and world to match the theme, and in many ways tailor the game to my table. If you are looking for a strict interpretation of 5e rules, looking to play the mechanics, min/max, run game-breaking builds, etc, and are put off by homebrew and rule changes I may not be the DM for you. However, if you are into the spirit of co-creation, like characters that are unique to the table, and want both narrative and granular play then feel free to join us and observe a session!

Character creation

Creating your character

Campaign is underway, but please feel invited to join us! I excel at getting players oriented :) PLAYABLE RACES: elves, humans, dwarves, halflings, and gnomes, and all variants. Tiefling, dragonborn, and Aasimar characters are playable, but the character must appear human with a simple disguise or in low-lighting. The reason for this is that the missions and adventures will be occurring within the human kingdoms, and suspicion of international involvement must be avoided. ABILITY SCORES: Standard Array ALIGNMENT: Must START as either Good or Lawful. LEVEL: 15 SKILL REQUIREMENTS: Must have Stealth, Perception, and Athletics. Must have 3 from this list: Deception, Persuasion, Insight, Thieves' Tools, Investigation, or Acrobatics. We will go over character, backstory, and game details in a one-on-one voice session! In terms of the world your character will inhabit think of Honor Among Thieves, Lord of the Rings, etc, but you are not adventurers or typical hero. This is a high-population city in a world where magic, vampires, and elementals are common knowledge even if most folks have seen little of any.

The current party

An Urban Campaign of Spies, Heists, Secret Organizations, Hidden Plots, High Lifestyles, and Streetwise Swashbucklers and Spellslingers Suitable for New Players and Veterans The Broken Pillar Hand has had a rough start. Starting out with their handler missing, none of the expected bevy of spy contacts and hidden merchants, and very little information from their first mission. But they have learned from their mistakes, and have methodically solved the problem of ignorance and support. Freeing their handler, saving and vetting their contacts, securing their own funding, and planning their own missions the hand has also survived assassinations and ambushes from enemies within the league. They thwarted a northern prince, met a titan, fought a god, befriended dragons, and now they move to thwart a temple of false gods and the spies they have employed! Party is: Level 15, Elf Rogue/Wizard, Human Samurai/Rogue, Human Wizard, Human Druid, Human Bard/Rogue. We are looking to welcome 1 more player to the table. Message me on discord if this game sounds exciting to you, and feel free to come sit in and check the game out. New players will have a private session to make their character, set expectations, and get caught up with the world story, and the fee for the private session will be refunded after the players has played for a few sessions. Campaign will go to at least 16th level, possibly level 20! Game has started, characters have have started to gain respect within the League, and are beginning to unravel many mysteries! The Story So Far... A rough-spoken archer from another world, a gunslinger with a mysterious past, a tactical wizard/rogue from the elven lands, and a wizard with dreams of power work together, unraveling a web of secrets which ensnares the guilds, the peasants, nobility, the kingdoms, and the remains of an ancient goddess of magic. The Broken Pillar Hand has made some allies among the crowding masses and myriad factions of the city of Araithen. Having survived the zealous assassins of the Dusty Coats, the powers of a vampire Lady, the plotting of her sorcerer, the cruel entertainments of a corrupt northern prince, many successful missions, two false gods, as well as the toppling of the Olympian Temple and Dusty Coat hideout... Now the party confronts a piece of the puzzle that has been missing for 30 years...Their bosses half-sister. Great time to start!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Think over your favorite rogues and assassins, heist and secret society stories, spy movies, and imagine those stories in a mid to high magic fantasy world! We will actually make the characters on Roll20 but it is important to come prepared with at least a few character concepts! Players will play as a recently inducted member of the League of Many Hands. They will have an "uncle"( team leader, NPC), receive missions, agree to certain rules, pay a percentage of loot to the League, and receive access to special services and businesses while the threads of a far-reaching plot are pulled apart across multiple kingdoms. There will be a good amount of sand-boxing, resource management, contact development, and even the opportunity to create your own safe houses and hideouts. Game style is primarily theater of the mind. Imaginative, fast-paced, rules-medium, and "rule of cool" oriented. Flavors are action genre, cloak and dagger, sword-and-sorcery, and rogue-centric. Note for Campaign In-Progress This game has started, and we are absolutely welcoming new players! To make sure new players feel welcome, and to alleviate any concerns of inclusion or immersion common to joining an existing campaign, I offer the following services: Interaction through text, and around 30 minutes on voice one-on-one to give backstory, setting info, and info on the game so far so that the new player can determine what their character has been doing so far. I will then message the party and catch them up on this. Once the session starts the players will recap the last session (as we do each session, for memory and continuity). Then I will introduce the new character and restate what they have been doing, and take a few minutes for the players to describe their characters, RP a bit, and familiarize themselves with each other. In terms of the game I begin working the new player's interests into the game, and add challenges specific for their character as soon as possible.

Safety

How DMFaenor creates a safe table

-Content Warning: Violence, creation of suspense, descriptive combat, NPC and potential character death. -Hard NOs: Torture, sexual abuse. I do NOT include these in my games. If any players attempts to force this they will be kicked. -Romantic scenarios, as well as "bad stuff" may happen "off-screen", but may only be hinted at in the vaguest of terms (that way players are each free to use their imagination if they choose) -I am familiar with the safety toolkit, and make all of them available in-game. Please be respectful of these tools and do not abuse them for game advantage. They are here to help players, not characters. Tools available: X/N/O cards are available for players- O=player ok to continue, N=players is becoming uncomfortable with content/events, X=players needs to stop or withdraw for a moment and reassess their experience. Script change-players can request Stop, FF, RW events if they are becoming triggered or feeling unsafe. The group can take Breaks as needed Open Door- If a player has to leave the session or campaign for reasons of emotional or psychological safety that player will be allowed to return as they desire. -Additionally I am *very* open to aftercare, debriefing, session wrap with highlights and stars and wishes! -Character creation/session 0 will give players an opportunity to mention specific triggers and needed boundaries, and each player will be expected to respect the boundaries set. Violators will be kicked.
