My girlfriend asked Sam to help plan our engagement because he is such an incredible DM. I'm not kidding. He created custom puzzles, and a whole escape room experience, complete with handmade artwork. I think what makes Sam so unique as a DM is that he is both incredibly knowledgeable about gameplay and encouraging of players' creativity and fun. I have found that most great DMs fall on one side or the other of that. They are either geniuses who are great at setting up a long-game plot and know exactly how each character should defeat each creature, or they encourage you to have fun, role play, and pursue side quests, even unplanned ones. Sam does it all! He works with each of his players outside of the game to make sure they build and use a character in ways that they are excited about, and is always open to questions. Especially for new players, Sam does a wonderful job providing options and leaving breadcrumb trails to set you up for success. He also creates a truly immersive experience with music to match the story, interesting and multidimensional characters to interact with, incredible voices, and graphic battle glory! I am also regularly blown away by his visual aids. Sam has created hand-drawn maps, hand built textured blocks for battle maps, hand-painted monsters, and created "ancient" letters and scrolls that we players find along our way. He even bolted plexiglass over the screen of his old TV to turn it into a tabletop map! Wherever you are in your DnD journey, Sam will meet you where you are and you'll have a BLAST!
