About Nick

My friends call me Nick Brekker, and the cult followers that know my true name struggle to pronounce it, so Nick is fine. In this mortal form, I’m 25 years old and have spent a significant amount of time over the past decade playing and being a Game Master in the 5e system of Dungeons and Dragons. Truly, this game and TTRPGs in general are magic to me still, almost sacred in the way that storytelling is integral to human nature. Gathering around the table to roll dice every week evokes the simple yet powerful activity of friends around a campfire, telling spooky stories to each other, something about it primal, and healing to the soul. D&D is one of my most ardent passions, truly astonished by the emergent gameplay and player driven stories that we all have been lost in, time and time again. I started playing 5e when I was in 6th grade. I started GMing games for my friends in Freshman year of Highschool, and ran a consistent homebrew game all throughout my formative years that steadily grew. I’ve played in myriad campaigns, and am currently running a homebrew game for the past 6 years, which I truly love and care for as if it was a living, breathing world. The NPCs from that game have become iconic, and we hold the PCs close to our hearts, after all characters are simply little fractal pieces of ourselves. I have put my blood, sweat, and tears into running games over the past 10+ years, and playing and GMing D&D is easily one of my favorite things to do in the entire world.

My favorite books are

The Magicians by Lev Grossman, All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas, and The Raven Boys by Maggie Steiphvater. Truly some great reads!

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

A quote from one of my long-term players when asked this question: "Creative, Passionate, and Genuinely Caring for the experience of your players" He went on to say I was also "Descriptive, Adaptable, and Accommodating" as a few other words that came to mind!

How Nick runs games

As a GM, I prioritize fun and safety at my table first and foremost. I tend to run a balanced mix between various forms of combat as well as heavy roleplay encounters and encourage my players to interact with and leave their mark on an everchanging world. In my games you can expect player-driven content; I always like to include backstory elements in my games to reflect the living, breathing world that any good D&D game should be. Regardless of whether I'm running a high-stakes combat or a session full of political intrigue, my main focus is letting each player shine and engage with the game in whatever manner is most rewarding for them. Players at my table are encouraged to roleplay amongst themselves, and I will happily dedicate large chunks of sessions to scenes where characters simply discuss some interesting lore that the players have stumbled upon, or a daunting plot hook that causes dissent among the party. I pour a lot of time and creative energy into any game I run, so players can expect vibrant places to explore, engaging NPCs and player-guided plots that will hopefully not just be enjoyable in the moment, but will generate stories to tell for days and years to come. As a GM, I'm always very visually descriptive when it comes to combat or spellcasting, and as a published writer you can expect professional storytelling and pacing. I love doing voicework for my NPCs and characters, and players can expect engaging roleplay and acting from my side of the table.
