About Thom Tseu

I started playing Dungeons & Dragons with the second edition, then tried the third, 3.5, and 5th editions, but my favorite system is D20 Modern. I've run many games and have never heard my players complain. I focus on the experience, the players' expectations, and the narrative coherence well before strict adherence to the rules. I appreciate players expressing their expectations, preferences, and even criticisms, as my goal is to improve everyone's experience. Violence, profanity, horror, and the like are not problems.

I became a GM because

The other GMs I knew before Startplaying weren't consistent, and adventures rarely lasted more than two sessions. I finally decided to remedy the situation by creating my own adventure using the 3.5 edition of D&D, set in the Morrowind universe. It became the one my group played the longest.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

I asked and they mostly said: Dedicated, Immersive and Wild.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Spending time with my kids outside, destroying them at Monopoly or Risk: Lord of the Ring, gaming, training, studying (law and criminology), private investigation, taking care of my garden, electric skateboard riding, smoke weed.

How Thom Tseu runs games

I love it when players are ingenious and cunning. I like consistency in the characters. I like it when there's depth in the relationships between characters, whether positive or negative. I don't like metagaming. I'll try at times to scare you, to make you anxious, and use those emotions to motivate your reactions. I prefer not to show the results of my dice rolls. I like Lovecraft, Stephen King, Dawn of the Dead, The Walking Dead (comic), the Shadowrun universe, Cyberpunk, and several anime.

I deal with rules issues by...

If the arguments, the explanation, the logic or the interpretation of the rule in question are good I will most probably take on the player side on this. It is important to say that I will not show my rolls to the players as I think it doesnt help with immersion.

Rules are...

A base on which you rely when stuff gets really complicated. I try to focus on the experience, the immersion and the coherence. If a rule doesnt help toward these I will probably bend it to create a more adequate situation for the players.

When it comes to voices

I will not act every dialogue to really focus on the critical and important ones. My girlfriend has studied and works in theater and cinema and she always said I would've done a great actor or voice actor. You can expect voice acting for sure, I think they are truly helping in creating the right set

Thom Tseu's ideal table

Its important that players knows that I dont show my rolls. I think its important not to show them to keep things immersive. So at first I think players should be cool with that. I try to maintain a fun ambiance where we joke around when its appropriated and where everybody feels heard and respected. I've GMed for a lot of different players and the only time it did not fitted well was when a player got shooked at how graphic I went to describe a massacre in a tavern. Its gonna be gore, violent, vulgar and graphic, yes! Im always open to adapt my GM style for the faint of heart but not too much, if I say that gore, violence, vulgarity and fucked up stuffs are on the table maybe they should find a more family friendly game. Even GMing for my own kids (I started when they were 7 and 6 years old) I tend to slip into horror and violence a little too much. Its also important to know that even though I use violence and vulgarity it's to benefit the ambiance, the story, the coherence and it's not random. I've became good buddy with everyone I played for now, I will try to maintain this tendency. I think the only subject that could make me uncomfortable would be sex scenes, while Im not completely against it if those happens they wont be as graphic as the violent scenes.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

Dawn of the dead, Shadowrun, Lovecraft, Stephen King, Attack on Titan, Goblin Slayer, James Gunn, Walking Dead (comics), Project Zomboid, Cyberpunk, Asian Zombie Movies.

I love it when a player

Dont try to do metagaming. Is creative. Is coherent with his character personnality. Finds a solution to a problem that I did not think of. I love when the players are eloquent and well written or spoken. I love to see how different personnality will come in action together.

My table is not the place for...

I honestly think my table is not for the faint of heart or the perverts. While I am not completely not open to sex scenes, I dont think this is my forte. There is gonna be a lot of graphic violence, vulgarity and fuccedup stuffs but always in the spirit of good storytelling.
