About me
I've been playing tabletop role-playing games since "elf" was a class in Dungeons & Dragons (that's around 40 years, y'all) and have extensive experience playing and running multiple systems, including D&D, Call of Cthulhu, Star Wars, and Monster of the Week to name just a few. But really, I'm doing this because I love role-playing games. I love the *story* that a GM and players create together. I am or have been a: writer, publisher, renter of virtual apartments for real money, injector of radioactive materials (for the forces of good, usually), sociologist, teacher, SJW, neurospicy, and dedicated to punching up.
GM Style
* I tend to be roleplay-heavy; while combat definitely occurs, if you're wanting a slug-em-out very tactical dungeon crawl, I may not be a good fit. * I adore the rule of cool. If you can figure out a reason why you should have a chance to do the thing, you'll get a chance. * Safety not guaranteed. I do not plan (or try) to kill characters, but I don't control your dice or Leroy Jenkins. Likewise, your characters have the freedom to ignore plot hooks, etc -- but the consequences may range from "boredom" to "the world blows up later." * I know what triggers are; I have several from past trauma. I respect and honor triggers and will work around them. Content warnings will be given up front for anticipated possible issues.

It's difficult to pick only three tags to describe Steven. He's an imaginative, highly competent, and well-rounded GM who knows how to play to his strengths and encourage player creativity. As of writing this review, I'm five sessions into one of his campaigns and enjoying myself immensely. We got off on a good foot with a Session 0 in which we talked about game expectations, desired tone and themes, and what each player was hoping for. Our first mission arc was heavy on roleplay and exploration, which was our table's preference, and when combat came up it was fun and engaging. He has been very accommodating to my character's motives and backstory, and he has utilized NPCs from my character's backstory, which is awesome. He also allows space for plenty of interaction between PCs, which is perfect for our table. As we start our second mission arc, I feel very invested in the story we are telling, and I look forward to session every week.
I really loved playing D&D with Steve as a GM. He is a great storyteller and can zig and zag with your characters as you learn the world and decide on your direction, find the things, battle, etc. The story was engaging and the dialogue and fighting were really a fun time. How therapeutic is it to solve problems and kill things? (All for the greater good of course...) VERY! Steve was also really helpful in a low-key way with prompting me around the online tech, which I'm not that familiar with. Can't wait to play again!
I’ve played two oneshots with Steven and I can confidently say that if you don’t sign up for a session, you’ll be missing out because they were some of the most fun I’ve had since picking up D&D a few months ago. Chaos gremlin that I am, I really appreciate the fact that creativity is highly encouraged (within the bounds of logic and reason, of course) and that shenanigans are welcome. The stories were well-written and engaging, with NPCs that felt like they had a life before you showed up in the scene and would continue to have one after. Even though you don’t see a lot of the world during the individual oneshots, there’s no feeling that your character has been dropped in Generic Setting to go Find/Do/Defeat the Generic Thing. There’s a subtle realness to the setting and characters that makes the world feel alive and gives weight to the idea that your choices can have consequences that last far beyond what damage you may take or whether you succeed on a persuasion check. This made for the easiest immersion I’ve experienced so far. As for the out-of-game side of things, Steven is super nice and genuinely wants his table to be a safe place where all the players can just relax and have fun. And as someone who is always a little nervous playing with a new GM/players, I very much appreciated the welcoming and chill environment. Not really surprising, then, that I had an absolute blast and cannot wait to play at his table again. In the most recent game, I laughed so much I had to mute myself at times so as to not disrupt play, reduced a bad guy to cinders, and the antics, oh, the antics. So, do I recommend this GM? Duh. Go click the ‘Join Game’ link, you silly goose.
I found Steven to be an especially great DM! Pacing was great (very important with a one shot) and still took the time to tie the characters together in the story. Combat was smooth and fun! He was very supportive of all the character choices. Players on the more shy side will find potential relief that no camera is the default and he made careful intentions to check in with players he hadn't heard from in a while. I was pretty impressed and plan to eventually play with him again!
