About me

I've been playing and running TTRPGs for around 35 years - starting with Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and D&D 2nd edition, and now focusing on a range of more indie games. At the moment I am running long term Symbaroum and Spire games. I tend to enjoy games with rich and complex worlds with plenty of lore, and often on the more gritty side of things. I love it when a game presents you with tough choices. I also run Paladin Roleplaying - we make dice and other cool accessories for roleplaying games.

GM Style

My approach as a GM is to do my best to make sure that everyone at the table feels included and heard, and above all that everyone is enjoying themselves! I prep heavily for games, and I take the opinion that it's the GMs job to know the rules, not the players, so newbies are always welcome at my table. The story is more important to me than complex simulationist rulesets - Roleplaying is encouraged, and I prefer theatre-of-the-mind combat. Most of my games are low to mid crunch (ie not too rules-heavy) I always use video, and prefer that players do too - I find that the game runs smoother when we have some visual cues from each other as well as just audio. Zoom normally does the job nicely. I sometimes use Roll20 if the game would benefit from handouts, or to use automated character sheets. I'm friendly and approachable, and I welcome questions :)

I've been new to most of the games I have played with Neil and he has made it very easy to pick up the games and get involved early on. He puts in a lot of time and effort preparing our sessions and tending to our needs, character building, rules explained or dealing with our off the wall suggestions, or even shutting down our utterly ridiculous requests politely.

I've played a bunch of games with Neil, both with Neil as the GM and Neil as a roleplayer. When running a game, Neil is very up front about inclusivity and safety tools. He is a big fan of setting the scene and building a narrative together. He is superb about knowing as many rules as needed, and being pragmatic when there's any level of uncertainty. What I like best about roleplaying with Neil though is that he's always going to be the player's advocate, he doesn't often say 'no', but he's prepared to do so if needed. He's always happy to explain why and offer alternatives. He's approachable, friendly and calm. Great for beginners, or established players looking for a change of pace. Highly recommended, especially if Neil is running a game you've never played before. He's a great GM, he's consistent in his delivery and he is a lot of fun.

I've played with Neil quite a few times. The reason? He is a great GM. Even when I was relatively new to RPGs, Neil was welcoming and friendly. His extensive knowledge of the game rules and lore ensures a great flow to every game. From one-shots to campaigns, I've always had a blast with Neil at the helm. I can't recommend him enough. A+++

Neil is great at running a fun game, laughs are never far away in his games. He is also a good GM for running with a player's crazy ideas.
