About Moon

Greetings to those reading this! My name is Andrew Hayes and I have been a Dungeon Master for 10+ years now mostly playing Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition (2014). I started running ttrpgs in high school for my friends in several home games and have now been the Dungeon Master for nearly 50-60 people of all experience levels! I would consider one of my specialties being teaching newer players to ttrpgs how to play, as I have had a lot of experience doing so with many people! A little bit about my own personal taste when it comes to how I run games is that I am a big fan of both high fantasy, and more gritty and grim dark fantasy. Some of my favorite series of all time include the Lord of the Rings (movies and books) and the Witcher (books and games) and they have provided me with a lot of inspiration on how fantasy worlds and it's characters should operate. That being said, I am a lover of a lot of different systems and settings. I have played probably 10-15 ttrpgs (those include D&D 5e, Pathfinder 1e and 2e, Dread, Cyberpunk 2020 and Red, XP to Level 3's Fallout homebrew system, Marvel Multiverse RPG, FIST, Dr. Magnet Hands, etc.), although I am still the most comfortable running D&D 5e. Thank you for taking the time to read this! Hope you have a wonderful rest of your day or night!

I ran my first game...

Early on in high school. I had heard of Dungeons and Dragons before and was interested in it because I have always been a big fan of fantasy and role-playing games. But no one I knew was a dungeon master, so I decided that running it was my best bet. Since then dming has become my favorite hobby!

When I'm not running games I'm...

Playing video games, watching movies/tv shows, reading, or working on creative pursuits like my YouTube channel or sketching. I am a big fan of works of art and storytelling which is why I think I am such a big fan of ttrpgs and running them!

How Moon runs games

My style of GMing is all about working in tandem with the players to craft a great story together. I love using rule of cool a lot, especially if it makes sense or is thematic in the moment, and overall prefer roleplay to combat. I however don't neglect combat by any means, I mostly try and do a 60/40 split on roleplay and combat respectively. Going into more depth on working in tandem with players to craft a story together, I want to work with you throughout the process of making your character. That way I have a good understanding on who your character is, and what you the player wants out of your character. I never plan a session without first thinking about the motivations of each of the players, cause I never want there to be a session in which the players are lost or not know what they want to do next. There will always be something for your characters to achieve and grow from in my games! For combat, I make sure to keep every combat lively and interesting by introducing dynamic changes throughout fights. What this can mean is that you will never just fight a monster until it's hit points go down, partway through the fight it will get a powerup, or the map will change in significant ways, or some sort of trap is set off etc. This ensures that combat remains fresh and exciting, and you are never just constantly attacking one thing until its hit points go down to 0.
