About me

I am a cousin of the late, great Gary Gygax. I wrote and published Castle Thrax* in 1985. My picture is on the bottom of the box of Extreme Werewolf* and on the face of Spellchess*. I facilitate cooperative storytelling experiences and love to help people explore bold, strange, unique worlds.

GM Style

Flowing, uncrunchy, narrative style. I believe that the people you meet in alternate worlds ground the experience and make it engaging. I am an entertainer; you will be entertained. Come; we have worlds to explore!

I felt like i could try anything. He reminded me of the pure joy and sometimes awe i had as a youth when i played. He's very enthusiastic and friendly. Great sense of humour. He can be serious and fun at the same time.

Mirth is a fantastic story teller. His worlds and NPCs are engaging and really draw you in, especially when he brings in props and different voices! He wants players to embrace the role play/storytelling aspect of the campaign, so you really get a chance to delve into your character and their motivations. I mentioned to him a goal of my character and he made sure to bring that into the story! I also really appreciate his campaigns are medium weight, meaning there's a real chance your character can perish based on your actions in game, but he doesn't make encounters overly hard and if there are NPCs in the group, he tries to use them to the party's advantage. He also tries his best to make an inclusive atmosphere among players. In my campaign, we had a rule of making sure to let everyone speak. When I had a conflict with another player, I was able to speak with him about it so that it could be addressed in a respectful manner! One thing that has really stuck with me as I play in my campaign with him is that, even if I'm having the worst day and I dread attending the session because I just want to sleep, I always, almost immediately, get drawn in and enjoy the entire session. Time flies. I have played in many different campaigns with other DMs, and this feeling, to me, makes Mirth the best DM I've encountered. I highly encourage you join the journey!

I have been playing Call of Cthulu via Zoom with Michael Mirth for nearly two years now, although I have known him for much longer. Prior to May 2020, I had never played any RPG before, and when Michael invited me I thought, "What the heck. It's COVID lockdown, there's nothing else to do, what could possibly go wrong?" Murder, mayhem, and insanity for a start! Mirth makes HP Lovecraft's bizarre world of Elder Gods, ghouls, and Mi-Go fun for any level of player, from a complete newbie like myself to the most experienced of players. Don't know what a D10 is? Michael will make learning RPG terms, procedures, and rules easy. Speaking of rules, Mirth's campaigns tend to be more dedicated to the narrative rather than based on strict protocols, so don't be afraid that you will flounder in complex regulations. As long as you are telling a good story, he may ignore the fact that you brought a firearm to the Dreamlands where gunpowder doesn't exist. Ummm - Forget I told you that, and focus on the fun! Some of my best CoC experiences have involved hearing Michael's laughter as the players do their best to save the world without going crazy. Don't get me wrong, he won't hesitate to kill you when things go wrong, but even if your character can't afford to rent an oxcart or turns into a zombie, it just makes you want to come back next week with a new character and a firm resolve that THIS time you will be victorious. My one complaint with Michael as a Game Master is that he is addictive. I would explain in more detail, but I have to go now. I am developing my new character for an upcoming game of Dungeons & Dragons with the incomparable Michael Mirth.

I’ve known him as a gamer for over 35 years. He is very level headed and fun. His story telling is quite powerful. He employs NPCs to leverage and manage party challenge to story.
