About me

I am an early American historian and a ten year veteran writer of the tabletop games industry. I have written extensively for the World of Darkness and the Chronicles of Darkness under my maiden name, Hayley Margules. I am also a player in the upcoming podcast The Mechangelus Chronicle, and I starred as Jill in a script reading of Scream 4 on Youtube. We will not be using maps, or moving by hex or square. I am a Storyteller, and my focus is on us telling stories together. We will be using our imaginations, not graphics.

GM Style

I loves narrative-rich games with a mix of roleplay, character work, and adventure. My favorite games focus on visceral, dark, horror, politics, and intrigue. My favorite thing in the world other than my son is Star Wars. I have a BA, two MAs, and left a PhD program in early American history. My research mostly focuses on kids and the conceptual evolution of childhood over time.

I first played a campaign with Hayley when she ran it back in 2012. Her power as a story teller has only grown since then. She has compelling plots with truly horrible villains that force you to be creative and think through what your plans are. Since then she's only grown in power and storytelling capability. In this most recent game of Something Is Wrong Here, Hayley did an amazing job of bringing new players in and keeping the story going! She's a true powerhouse and makes everyone feel welcome.

The game we played went super smoothly. I have comparatively little experience with (non-computer) RPGs of any kind, and her organizational skills, knowledge of the rules, and deft communication made it relatively easy for me to ramp up into it despite being nervous and a bit confused at first. She does a great job creating a safe environment and at the same time trusting the players at the table so that we can have an experience that is really of our own creation. I witnessed some truly creative and poignant performances at the table thanks to this, while doing my best to keep up. I had a great time, learned a lot, and would play with Hayley again!

Hayley is a genuine mystic and an excellent facilitator. Even with a bizarre, unfamiliar, highly abstract system, I always felt that our game was being played exactly as it should be. I also appreciate her exceptional commitment to inclusivity and psychological safety, even as we embarked for dangerous regions of the mind.

Super helpful and knowledgeable - her teaching background really shows when she's explaining rules or tricky aspects of the game. I really appreciated how she handled the sensitive topics in Alice is Missing and guided us through the game - all of us players could not stop talking afterward about what an incredible experience it was!

I had a lot of fun playing with Hayley. As a new player it was very easy to get into the flow of the story with her help!

Hayley is the kind of GM who wants you to be part of the story. Her themes and narratives handle dark topics with real insight as players let the story unfold. Hayley emphasizes the storytelling and social aspects of her games. All your choices have an impact as she plays out the setting. Hayley does prepare players for triggering subject while exploring the trauma and reality through their characters. As long as you engage Hayley gives that effort back with worlds and twists. Some of my favorite moments with Hayley have been the small stuff. Just being able to be my character and know she’ll bring it all to life. She’ll talk out what you want and answer questions and help make it happen. Highly recommended for any gamer who loves a long term story, magic lore mixed with real issues, political allegory, and using rpgs to explore and unpack trauma.
