About Lucas

Writer of things, builder of worlds, and probably the reason your local game store ran out of dice… I'm one of the nerds behind RISKY ROLE and the Forever GM behind "The Cliffhanger," the adventure we played in our first ever actual play. A professional GM since 2020 for thousands of hours, dozens of players, and nearly as many campaigns, I recently pivoted to writing and designing content rather than running games... but with my new day job I'm excited to jump back into the waters I was born in! I started playing TTRPGs in 2005 at 7 years old, started GMing shortly thereafter, and I've been going strong ever since. I've also dabbled in game writing and narrative design in the world of video games. Looking forward to playing as many games as possible in 2026 and beyond! I got started GMing...

as a kid! I started playing TTRPGs at 7 years old after school with a teacher and other kids. Before I knew it, I started GMing every chance I got... even if there were no dice on hand! I've lived and breathed RPGs for 20+ years.

My favorite system of all Time is

Currently, it's Shadowdark! I've run more than 10,000 hours of 5e over the course of 10 years, and I love it, but Shadowdark scratches all my itches... I haven't dabbled too much in other OSR games yet, but I will. Eager to run 100,000 hours of Shadowdark / OSR in the years to come!

When I'm not running games I'm...

thinking about running!!! I write adventures, character options, a newsletter, and am a co-founder of the TTRPG actual play group, Risky Role.

How Lucas runs games

I love building long-term stories in immersive sandboxes that are peppered with original adventures that push the envelope. I'm constantly trying new things (both mechanically and narratively) for the players' enjoyment and surprise as well as my own. My games do tend to be lethal: we sprinkle in plenty of humor as we play, but the stories themselves are often tinted with elements of horror, survival, moral grey-ness, etc. Think "Song of Ice and Fire," "The Last of Us," and co. I've developed a reputation for high-stakes games: high risk and high reward! This goes for combat, roleplay, exploration, and beyond. For example, I love throwing tons of loot at the PCs... if they've survived long enough to earn it! A recent notable example was 3000 pounds of silver bullion, coinage, silverware, etc... But now the issue is transporting it across town in a time of famine and extreme poverty! Another was moving a 400-pound meteorite of nearly pure adamantine... How do you move that, who do you trust with it, etc? One of my favorite things about GMing is also one of my players' favorites: together, we build a cohesive, living world. The outcomes of players' decisions ripple throughout the world, often affecting games that take place years down the line in completely different regions of the world! I've been running games in four different eras of this world for over a decade and more than 50 players, at this point.

I deal with rules issues by...

... going with the flow and looking it up later! Rulings > Rules. The rule of cool reigns supreme! We're here to have fun and tell dope stories.

My games focus on...

... dope, immersive stories. My players and I have crafted stories that we remember fondly years later, we've laughed together countless times, we've cried together... I've even been thanked for giving a player nightmares! I have a reputation for High Stakes games: high risk & high reward.

When it comes to voices

I'm far from professional but I have fun with it!

High Risk / High Reward scenarios

I love it when a player

... takes notes, gets curious / asks questions, gets into character, makes decisions for the plot / roleplay, gets out of their shell... and, of course, has fun! Fun is infectious. One of the greatest gifts is when a player reminisces with me about a session or campaign.

My perfect party mix is

sweet and salty. I don't think there is one! I've run amazing Oops All Rogues games, games for hardcore min-maxers, idiotic 12-hour sessions that went on until the sun came up, and everything in between. As long as the vibes are there and there's player chemistry, we're in for an amazing time.
