About Kai Solace
Welcome! I'm Kai (they/them), a theatre kid turned TTRPG nerd who is absolutely in love with this form of collective storytelling. As a game master, I focus on immersive roleplaying, tailoring every adventure to the players and their characters, and encouraging shenanigans whenever possible. I bring a lot of "yes and" energy to the virtual table and foster a spirit of fun and creativity.

I became a GM because
It always seemed like the most fun option to me! I spent 5 years watching actual play shows before ever getting the chance to play myself, and from the beginning I knew I wanted to be a GM. The combination of theatricality, worldbuilding, and serving players and their stories brings me lots of joy!

Working my 9-5 as an administrator at a local nonprofit, obsessively watching Starkid musicals and Dropout shows, knitting/crocheting complex patterns, and taking long walks to my local queer coffee shops.
How Kai Solace runs games
👥 Player stories first. My favorite part of TTRPGs is making meaningful shared stories with you, the amazing people at my tables. And my philosophy is always that the players are the heroes of the story. When in doubt about what to do next, I go to "what makes the most sense for the story/would be appropriately dramatic/would allow my players to explore X part of their backstory?" first. 🩵 Laid back. I'm not a huge rules stickler, I love messing around with unique mechanics, and I'll generally allow something if it seems cool. I use virtual tools that are simple, free to players, and allow even the most novice player to immediately start playing. 💭 Creative. I tend to re-write large sections of written modules to make them specific to each group I'm running it for, and try to keep sessions fresh with interesting mechanics, monsters, or encounters. I put my theatre training to use with character voices and immersive music and sound. I also love it when players think outside the box! I love to "yes and" your incredible ideas (within reason - sometimes it becomes a "no but"). 📖 All the lore. Worldbuilding is my JAM and I tend to overthink lots of little details about a campaign's story and setting because I find it really fun. I especially love it when this is guided by or co-created by players, and I welcome you into as much or as little of the process as you would like to be a part of.

I prep by
Running written adventures that I heavily tailor to each party! I find that I'm most creative with a starting point, rather than building everything from scratch. I use adventures like they are scaffolding, not rails. It's a starting point to build off of, rather than something to strictly follow.

There to help us tell incredible stories together! If a rule gets in the way of a story moment, I'll find way to bend or work around it. I like playing around with unique mechanics borrowed from various systems when the scene calls for it, and am very much a Rule of Cool GM.

Is fine when it's in service to the story, and true to the character. But story always comes first. If you are the kind of player who focuses on diving into game mechanics, optimizing everything, and wants a rules-as-written approach, I am not the GM for you.
