About me
I’m a writer, Game Master, programmer, and survivor. I’ve been playing tabletop games since I was eleven, where I took over the school lunch table’s Basic D&D games. I have hosted 400+ games over 30+ years. After marriage, kids, and a 20+ career on the web, whammo! My body said no more, attacked itself and I went down, paralyzed by a rare autoimmune disease. Over the last few years, I’ve been slowly recovering. One day I’ll walk again. At my worst, while I was locked in a body I couldn’t move or communicate with, I wanted just three things, my family to stay intact, to write books, and to play D&D again. In my heart, this site was made for me. Let’s roll initiative.
GM Style
The RPG, whatever it is, be it swords & sorcery, superheroes or werewolves in the city, I believe that friends come first. RPGs are a great excuse to get together with them, not the other way around. I don’t claim to know every rule perfectly, that’s what the books are for, and I’ve been known to fudge a roll for the sake of the story, but I dislike ‘nerfing’ encounters, and I like the idea that the rules that matter are the ones the GM says matters. It keeps interfering rules from detracting from the fun. I like a light-hearted mix of combat, role-play, banter and the occasional puzzle to mix things up.

For the last several weeks I have been playing a D&D5E game under John Saye with 3 former strangers whom I now call friends. John has a quality I adore in game masters: The Ability to Roll with It. By that I mean he listens to his players, let's us try whatever we want, and adjusts on the fly to make the story work. He appreciates our preference for humor and to limit violence, and rolls with it. For example, I am playing a slightly less than sane gnome rogue. Sometimes I think I am a dwarf, other times a barbarian, sometimes a healer, and I'll act out and justify my actions, totally in character. John does not get upset, he genuinely is curious and let's me try stuff and live with the consequences. And sometimes, those consequences are fantastic! I have befriended lizard and frog people and attempted to diffuse every encounter with intelligent groups, while purposefully keeping the relevant stats controlling such actions low. The game has taken on a lighter tone with less violent consequences (still violent, but we try not to be murder hobos) and I think the story suits our group's party better. John rolled with us and the game has taken on a new life that works for us. He's great! John even makes death interesting. Tonight one of our party died, and she had a blast! One party member killed a baby dragon with a stick (quarterstaff), because he was drunk and forgot he had a better weapon! I was preaching medical science with bandages and alcohol, cleaning people with prestidigitation, and repairing their clothes with mending while the druid was actually healing! It was fun! That's how good John is, he took a tough fight and still let us have fun while balancing the tension, and we came away with stories to share! I look forward to gaming more with John Saye, and I thank him for helping 4 strangers become friends in the process!
John has been a great DM for over 30+ years. His story writing is superb. We have run campaigns together for small and large groups alike. Our largest group was for about 25 people for every two weeks. I was in readable because it lasted for about a year. He knows the rules but is not a rules lawyer. He style is fluid and plays along with the players without letting them take advantage of his generosity. He can be firm but is fair. I would recommend him to any group as a DM.
I have played many games with John in the past. D&D 3rd edition, MIB, GERPS, Star Wars, and on and on. While the world we played in were not always his (Star Wars), he always made me feel like my character was part of it, like he belonged there. My favorite with him a had to be Cyberpunk 2020. John always kept the Cyberpunk feel, while keeping you on your toes in a fire fight whether you were a ne'er-do-well cop trying to make right by the city, or a fixer totally out of your element, John always kept you entertained, excited, and wanting more.
